Aussies Abroad Wrap: Mooy and Rowles debut in Scottish Premiership, Brook scores on first League Two start

There was a Scottish Premiership debut for Aaron Mooy and Kye Rowles while Lachlan Brook kicked off the League Two season with a goal on debut and pre-season wrapped up around Europe.

United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, where a number of our Socceroos and U23s began their Scottish Premiership campaigns.

Aaron Mooy and his Celtic team began their title defense with a 2-0 win over Aberdeen at Celtic Park on Monday. Mooy came on in the 83rd minute to close out the victory. 

Nathaniel Atkinson and Kye Rowles kicked off the new Premiership season with a 2-1 win over Ross County at Tynecastle on Saturday.


Rowles played the full 90 in a back three while Atkinson was forced off with an injury after 27 minutes. The extent of the injury is currently unknown. 

Australian U23 Lewis Miller was an unused substitute as Hibernian won 1-0 against Ryan McGowan's St Johnstone on Saturday. McGowan played the full 90 in a back three as he made his return to Scottish football. 

In England, Riley McGree's Middlesbrough started their English Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.  McGree played the full 90 and was denied a penalty as Middlesbrough let a one-goal lead slip against the Baggies. 

Elsewhere in the Championship, Kenny Dougall played 25 minutes off the bench as Blackpool FC secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Reading. After having a mixed pre-season, Dougall came on and played well to ensure Blackpool started their campaign with a win.

Bailey Wright was also an unused substitute in Sunderland's 1-1 draw with Coventry City on Sunday. 

In Olyroos Abroad news, goalkeeper Jacob Chapman was an unused substitute in Huddersfield's 1-0 loss to Burnley on Saturday while  Jay Rich-Baghuelou played 90 minutes as Accrington Stanley kicked off the League One campaign with a 2-2 draw with Charlton on Saturday. Charlton thought they had won the tie with a 94th-minute goal but Accrington struck back at the death to secure a point. 


Elsewhere in England, Lachlan Brook made the ideal start to life at League Two club Crewe Alexandra with a goal in the 22nd minute to ensure a 2-1 opening day victory over Rochedale on Saturday. Brook's low drive from 20 yards that crept inside the near post capped off a fantastic debut and a first senior club goal since July 2020 when he scored for Adelaide United against Perth Glory. 

Meanwhile, Tyrese Francois was an unused substitute as Fulham closed out their pre-season with a 1-1 draw against Villareal on Sunday.

Cameron Peupion was also in action for Brighton & Hove Albion's under-21s on Friday. The 19-year-old played 60 minutes as Brighton continued their preparations for the new Premier League 2 campaign with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa in a training ground friendly.

Europe

In Germany, Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe's St Pauli left it late to secure a passage through to the second round of the DFB Cup after beating fourth-tier SV Straelen 4-3 with a 90th-minute winner on Saturday. Irvine played 90 minutes at the base of midfield while Metcalfe was an unused substitute. 

Over in Denmark, Joel King came on in the 83rd minute as Odense Boldklub lost 5-1 to FC Midtjylland in Round 2 of the Danish Superliga. 

In Belgium, Jason Davidson came on in the 70th minute as K.A.S Eupen secured a shock 2-1 victory over Club Brugge on Sunday.

In Spain, Awer Mabil came off the bench as  Cádiz CF  lost 1-0 to Lille in their fourth pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday. Cadiz kick off the La Liga season against Mat Ryan's Real Sociedad on August 15. 

In the Netherlands, Danny Vukovic was an unused substitute as NEC Nijmegen beat Heracles Almelo 3-1 in their final pre-season tie against Heracles on Saturday.

Fran Karacic also featured in Brescia's last pre-season friendly as they closed out the summer with a 4-1 win over Mantova 1911 on Sunday. 

In Olyroos abroad news, Alou Kuol was an unused substitute as VfB Stuttgart progressed in the DFB-Pokal Cup with a hard-fought ten-men 1-0 win over Dynamo Dresden on Saturday.

Josh Rawlins was also an unused substitute as FC Utrecht concluded their pre-season with a 2-2 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk on Sunday. 

Asia

Adam Taggart returned from injury and played eight minutes off the bench as Cerezo Osaka secured a 2-0 victory over Avispa Fukuoka in the J League on Saturday. 


In the J2 League, Mitch Duke started and played 80 minutes as Fagiano Okayama drew 1-1 with JEF United on Saturday. The draw leaves Fagiano in fifth on the J2 League table with 14 games remaining in their promotion charge. 

The United States

Finishing with Major League Soccer, where Milos Degenek Columbus Crew match against Charlotte FC was postponed after inclement weather disrupted play. 

Degenek was on the bench but the match was abandoned in the 17th minute with the score locked at 0-0 after a second weather delay. The match will be rescheduled and played from the time at which it went into a delay. The date and time of the continuation of the match are yet to be determined.
