Aussies Abroad Wrap: Mooy scores and assists, Mabil & Alou Kuol debut

Aaron Mooy's red-hot run continued over the weekend, while Awer Mabil made his AC Sparta Prague debut and Alou Kuol also featured in the Bundesliga for the first time.

United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, where Aaron Mooy started, played 67 minutes, scored a goal and set up another as Celtic beat Dundee United 2-0 to restore their nine-point lead in the Scottish Premiership on Monday.

Jota headed home in the 51st minute after Mark Birighitti misjudged Mooy’s cross before the Socceroo converted a penalty four minutes later. The goal is Mooy's fifth in seven matches.

Aziz Behich also started and played another 90 minutes. 

Ryan Strain started, played 87 minutes and assisted as St. Mirren returned to winning ways with an important 1-0 victory over Motherwell on Sunday. Keanu Baccus was suspended for the match.

St Mirren rise up to sixth while four teams now sit on 20 points at the foot of the table - with Motherwell placed in ninth on goal difference alone, having won once in 11 games.

Cameron Devlin, Kye Rowles and Nathaniel Atkinson all started for Heart of Midlothian in a 0-0 draw against Livingston on Monday.

Rowles played another 90 minutes while Devlin was substituted in the 39 minute to injury and Atkinson played 74 minutes. Garang Kuol also came off the bench at half time but he could not affect the outcome of the match this time.  

James Jeggo started and played another 90 minutes as Hibernian smashed Aberdeen 6-0 on Sunday.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Dylan McGowan played 90 minutes in the Championship for Hamilton Academical as they beat Partick Thistle 1-0 on Sunday.

Over to England, where Kenny Dougall came off the bench in the 73rd minute as Blackpool lost 2-1 to Southampton FC on Sunday in the FA Cup fourth-round.

Tom Rogic started and played 58 minutes as West Bromwich Albion lost 3-0 to Bristol City in the FA Cup fourth-round on Sunday.

Bailey Wright missed Sunderland's 1-1 draw with Fulham in the FA Cup fourth-round with a calf strain. 

Elsewhere in the FA Cup fourth-round, Massimo Luongo debuted for Ipswich Town FC for the second time as his side ground out a 0-0 draw with Burnley on Sunday. 

In the Championship, Riley McGree started and was substituted in the 94th minute as Middlesbrough returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Watford on Sunday.

Callum Elder played another 90 minutes as Hull City beat Queens Park Rangers 3-0 on Sunday.

Europe

Starting in the Czech First League, where Awer Mabil came off the bench in the 54th minute to make his AC Sparta Prague debut in 1-1 draw against SK Sigma Olomouc on Sunday. 

Sparta currently sit in third position, while SK Sigma Olomouc drop into fifth. 

Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe both started for St Pauli as the 2. Bundesliga returned with a 1-0 win for St Pauli against Nurnberg on Sunday.

Irvine played 90 minutes while Metcalfe was substituted in the 59th minute as St Pauli rise up to 10th with a victory. 

The match marked Irvine's 50th appearance for the club. 

In the Netherlands, Maty Ryan made his third AZ Alkmaar start but conceded five goals as a thrilling 5-5 draw was played out against FC Utrecht on Sunday. 

AZ Alkmaar remain in second after the draw as they look to close the two point gap on Feyenoord. 

In Serie B, Fran Karacic started and played 90 minutes as Brescia Calcio lost 1-0 against Como on Sunday. 

Jason Davidson played another 90 minutes for KAS Eupen as they lost 3-1 to Standard de Liège in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday. The loss means Eupen sit outside the relegation zone on goal difference. 

James Holland started in FK Austria Wien's 2-1  friendly win over First Vienna on Sunday as they prepare for the Austrian Bundesliga to resume on February 13.

In Norway, Nick D'Agostino pulled on the Viking FK shirt for the first time and scored a goal in a 4-1 win over Sandnes Ulf in a friendly on Sunday.

In the English Championship, goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic started again as Huddersfield lost 2-0 against Coventry on Sunday.


In Scotland, Lewis Miller came off the bench in the 73rd minute as Hibernian beat Aberdeen 6-0 on Sunday.

It marked the Olyroos fullback's long-awaited return from a long-term injury that has kept him out of action since October 2022. 

Europe

In Germany, Alou Kuol came off the bench in the 86 minute to make his Bundesliga debut as VfB Stuttgart lost to RB Leipzig 2-1 on Saturday.

Fresh from being nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award for his stunning scorpion-style goal in the group stage of the AFC U23 Asian Cup, Kuol has continued his impressive start to 2023 with his first appearance in Germany's top flight. In doing so, he became the 21st Australian to play in the competition. 

Elsewhere in Germany, John Iredale came off the bench in the 92nd minute as SV Wehen Wiesbaden beat Borussia Dortmund II 1-0 on Monday in the 3. Liga.

In the Netherlands, Dylan Ryan was an unused substitute in the Eerste Divisie as FC Den Bosch drew 1-1 MVV Maastricht on Saturday.

  • In Italy's Serie A, Cristian Volpato was introduced in the 89th minute as AS Roma were defeated 2-1 by league leaders Napoli on Monday. 
  • In Greece, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos was an unused substitute in PAS Giannina's 1-1 draw with Atromitos on Sunday in the Super League. 
  • In France's National 2, Yaya Dukuly was an unused substitute in Stade Reims II's 3-1 loss against  Wasquehal on Sunday. 

United Kingdom

  • In the English FA Cup fourth-round, Dean Bouzanis came off the bench in the 75th minute at Old Trafford as Reading lost 3-1 to Manchester United on Sunday. 
  • Elsewhere in the FA Cup fourth-round, Cameron Burgess was an unused substitute as Ipswich Town FC drew 0-0 with Burnley on Sunday. 
  • Also in the FA Cup fourth-round, Marlee Francois made his long-awaited debut for Bristol City's first team in a 3-0 win over West Brom.
  • In League One, goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer started again as Charlton Athletic lost 2-1 against Bolton on Sunday.
