Aussies Abroad: Rogic’s late goal saves Celtic

Socceroos star Tom Rogic has come off the bench to save Celtic from a shock defeat in Scotland with an injury-time equaliser.

Rogic was introduced into the fray with 20 minutes left at the Tony Macaroni Arena with the Hoops trailing Livingston 2-1.

And just as it looked like Neil Lennon’s men would slump to their third league defeat of the season, Rogic delivered a vital goal in the first minute of stoppage-time.

French striker Odsonne Edouard did brilliantly down the left before cutting back to the 27-year-old Aussie to finish off.

Rogic’s heroics came after Celtic had seen Callum McGregor’s early goal surpassed by strikes either side of the break to the home side’s Jon Guthrie and Scott Robinson.

But the Socceroos playmaker had the final say as Celtic extended their lead at the top of the SPL ladder to 13 points as they close in on another title.

Celtic are at home in their next match on Sunday (2am AEDT), taking on St Mirren.

Elsewhere, Massimo Luongo’s Sheffield Wednesday were knocked out of the FA Cup after losing 1-0 at home against Manchester City.

Luongo missed the match through injury, with Sergio Aguero’s 53rd-minute goal proving enough for Pep Guardiola’s men.

And Trent Sainsbury’s Maccabi Haifa saw their Cup Quarter Final against Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel postponed after the nation’s Ministry of Health decided to call matches off due to the ongoing concerns of the Coronavirus.
