Aussies Abroad Preview: Taggart takes on Muscat’s Yokohama as pre-season continues elsewhere

It is a battle of the Aussies as Adam Taggart’s Cerezo Osaka take on a Yokohama F. Marinos side coached by Kevin Muscat this weekend, while our Socceroos and Australia U23's continue their pre-seasons.

Asia

Starting in the J1 League, where Taggart will be in action for Cerezo Osaka when they host league leaders Yokohama F. Marinos on Sunday (8pm AEST).

Following a 3-3 draw with Kashima Antlers on Wednesday, Cerezo will be looking to pick up all three points against Kevin Muscat’s high-flying Yokohama. 


Elsewhere in Japan, Mitchell Duke will be in action for Fagiano Okayama when they travel to Oita Trinita on Sunday (8pm AEST) in the J2 League. 

Duke came off the bench in the 65th minute as Fagiano Okayama FC defeated Omiya Ardija 4-2 on Wednesday. 

The United States

Over to Major League Soccer, where Socceroos defender Milos Degenek and his Columbus Crew side travel to bottom-placed Chicago Fire FC on Sunday (10am AEST). 

Following a 0-0 draw with Philadelphia on Monday, Columbus will be desperate to return to winning ways as they chase a finals series play-off position in the MLS Eastern Conference. 

Since his switch from Red Star Belgrade to the Crew in January, Degenek has been a regular in the heart of the defence.

In his most recent match against Philadelphia, the 28-year-old had a won 86% of his ground duels, made six clearances and had a 79% accurate pass percentage. 

Defender Brad Smith will also be in action for D.C United, as they travel to Philadelphia on Saturday (9:30am AEST) with the hope of recording back-to-back victories following a much-needed win against Orlando on Tuesday. 

D.C United currently sit second bottom on the ladder but they have three games in hand over their rivals.

Europe

In Norway, Gianni Stensness will be hoping to return from injury when his Viking FK side travel to Lillestrøm SK on Monday (2am AEST). 

Viking are currently in a Europa Conference League qualifying position in third on the Eliteserien table but they will be hoping to take points off league leaders Lillestrøm to close the eight-point gap. 

In Germany, Connor Metcalfe and Jackson Irvine will have a week on the training pitch without any friendly matches as they prepare for the Bundesliga 2 season to kick off on July 16 against FC Nürnberg. 

Ajdin Hrustic’s Eintracht Frankfurt side beat fourth-division side Viktoria Aschaffenburg 1-0 in their second friendly of pre-season with Hrustic playing the last 30 minutes on Wednesday. He will next be in action on Saturday (11pm AEST) against James Holland’s former side LASK.

In Spain, Awer Mabil has joined up with his new Cádiz CF teammates as they prepare for their first pre-season friendly against Barbate CF on July 15. 

Maty Ryan has also joined his Real Sociedad team ahead of their first pre-season match-up against Denis Genreau’s newly-promoted Toulouse FC on July 17 in San Sebastian. 

Genreau will also be in action on Saturday against Troyes in Toulouse’s second pre-season friendly of the summer. 

In Belgium, Jason Davidson will be hoping to wear the K.A.S. Eupen colours for the first time alongside James Jeggo when they play FC Kaiserslautern on Saturday (11pm AEST) in the club's second pre-season match. 

Over to the Netherlands, where Danny Vukovic will also be hoping to get his first pre-season minutes of the summer when NEC Nijmegen host RKC Waalwijk on Saturday (10:30pm AEST). 

In Olyroos abroad news, Jordan Courtney-Perkins will be hoping to be involved in Raków Częstochowa’s Polish Supercup Final match against Lech Poznan on Sunday (4:10am AEST). 

Hosine Bility has returned to FC Midtjylland in Denmark following the conclusion of his loan spell at Knattspyrnufélagið Fram in Iceland. Bility leaves Fram having made five appearances since joining the club in April. 

Josh Rawlins will again be in action for FC Utrecht when they take on Club Brugge on Wednesday (11:30pm AEST). Rawlins played 45 minutes for Utrecht as they went down 2-1 to Genk on Wednesday. 

Alou Kuol will be hoping to see action more for VfB Stuttgart against FC Zurich on Sunday (1:30am AEST) after scoring a second-half hat trick against amateur team SV Böblingen earlier in the week. 

United Kingdom

Starting in England, where Bailey Wright and Sunderland will take on last season’s Europa League finalists Rangers FC in Portugal on Sunday (5am AEST). 

Riley McGree and Middlesbrough play York City in their second pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday (4am AEST). McGree will be hoping to continue his early pre-season form after scoring the opener in Middlesbrough’s last match. 

In other Olyroos abroad news, goalkeepers Nicholas Bilokapic and Jacob Chapman have begun pre-season with Huddersfield Town’s first team ahead of Tuesday’s (11pm AEST) match against Morecambe. 

Jay Rich-Baghuelou’s Accrington Stanley FC take on Stoke City in a friendly on Thursday (4am AEST).

In contract news, Cameron Peupion has signed a new contract extension with Brighton & Hove Albion. The 19-year-old featured regularly for Brighton’s under-23s last season, making 25 appearances and scoring four times.

Having joined League Two side Gillingham on a season-long loan from Charlton Athletic, Ashley Maynard-Brewer will be in action on Saturday (10pm AEST) when Gillingham plays Dover Athletic in a pre-season friendly.

The Charlton academy graduate played 17 games in the Scottish Premiership last season while on loan with Ross County and has made five appearances for Charlton’s first team since making his debut in 2018.

In Scotland, Lewis Miller will be hoping to make his competitive debut for Hibernian when they host Clyde in the Scottish League Cup group stage on Saturday (12am AEST).
