Jamie Maclaren came off the bench to net a late equaliser as Hibernian salvaged a 1-1 draw against Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League.
Hibs dominated throughout but fell behind to Tommy Hoban’s goal on the stroke of half-time. The home side applied more pressure in the second half, and coach Neil Lennon introduced Maclaren for Lewis Stevenson on 76 minutes.
With Aberdeen four minutes away from a hard-fought win, Hibernian finally broke their resistance when Maclaren touched in Paul Hanlon’s delivery to preserve the Edinburgh side’s unbeaten home record in 2018.
Lennon’s team have collected five league point from three games, with Mark Milligan still to come into the team after he was signed on August 18.
Ben Garuccio played 90 minutes as Hearts made it three straight wins to stay top of the league, while Oliver Bozanic was an unused substitute. Uche Ikpeazu netted the decisive goal in a 1-0 win at Kilmarnock.
Ryan on point but Brighton fall short
Mat Ryan kept Liverpool at bay but his Brighton and Hove Albion side were not able to snatch an equaliser as the Reds ran out 1-0 winners at Anfield.
The 26-year-old shot-stopper made an excellent close-range reaction save from Robert Firmino’s header after nine minutes, but he could do little to prevent Mohamed Salah guiding a precision strike in off the post on 22 minutes.
Ryan parried away Gini Wijnaldum’s firm strike on the half hour and gathered Sadio Mane’s deft header shortly afterwards as Jurgen Klopp’s side ramped up the pressure going into the interval.
Brighton came back stronger in the second half, with chances falling to Davy Propper and Pascal Gross, but the visitors could not find the net. The loss leaves the Seagulls with three points from their opening three games. Ryan made six saves in total.
Mooy's Huddersfield finally off the mark
Aaron Mooy was forced to put in a real shift as Huddersfield battled out a goalless stalemate with Cardiff City at the Kirklees Stadium.
In a clash of two solid defences, the Aussie playmaker completed 72% of his 43 total passes as the Terriers controlled the possession through the first half.
The game turned on 63 minutes when Mooy’s midfield partner Jonathan Hogg saw red for a headbutt on Harry Arter. Mooy was then forced into a more defensive roll to as Huddersfield tightened up to lock up their first point of the 2018-19 season.
Leckie misses Bundesliga opener
Hertha Berlin made a winning start to the Bundesliga season, but Mathew Leckie was forced to watch from the sidelines.
Vedad Ibisevic’s 27th minute effort earned a 1-0 victory over Nuernberg, with Leckie missing out as he re-builds his fitness levels. The 27-year-old suffered a ligament injury during a training camp in Austria two weeks ago.
Coach Pal Dardai announced to German media outlet Kicker that Leckie would miss the season opener but did not put a timeline on his return, preferring to monitor his progress and nurse him back to full fitness without taking unnecessary risks.
Luongo's QPR up and running
Massimo Luongo’s QPR got off the mark for the season with a 1-0 win against Wigan Athletic. Their first victory of the 2018-19 campaign came courtesy of Tomer Hemed’s 35th minute goal. That result lifts them off the bottom of the Championship ladder in 22nd.
Mile Jedinak and Aston Villa had three points snatched from their grasp in the last minute by Sam Baldock’s penalty as Bristol City grabbed a 1-1 draw at Villa Park. Villa remain undefeated in fourth place.
Jackson Irvine missed out on Hull City’s trip to Stoke City after scoring twice in the midweek win against Rotherham. Stoke City downed the Tigers 2-0, with James McClean scoring and Jordy de Wijs netting an own goal. Adam Federici was an unused substitute for the Potters.
