Watch: Mabil assist sends Midtjylland top

FC Midtjylland enter the international break on top of the Danish Superliga, partly in thanks to Caltex Socceroo Awer Mabil.

The 23-year-old forward provided a match-winning assist for his Wolves side in their 1-0 victory over Brondby overnight, a rematch of the 2019 Danish Cup Final.

Mabil – who opened his league account with an excellent finish against Sonderjyske seven days earlier - saw a deadly cross from the right flank turned home by Brondby defender Anton Skipper on seven minutes.

It was the ex-Adelaide United man’s fourth consecutive league start, and he was withdrawn just after the hour mark after another strong outing.

It is now advantage Midtjylland in the title race following Copenhagen’s shock 1-0 defeat to Aab Aalborg.

Elsewhere in Denmark, Mustafa Amini was on hand to secure AGF’s third league win in a row after a 1-0 win over Esbjerg.

Behich off the mark after late drama

They left it late, but Aziz Behich’s Istanbul Basaksehir are up and running the Turkish Super Lig courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Genclerbirligi.

Istanbul trailed Giovanni Sio's 36th minute opener but an 83rd minute penalty from Demba Ba and last-minute winner from Edin Visca helped Behich’s side grab a big win.

Behich – who has been deployed at left back ahead of former Premier League star Gael Clichy in his club’s opening three matches of the campaign – played the full 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, James Jeggo and Austria Wien were beaten 3-1 by Rapid Wien in the Vienna derby.
