Aussies Abroad: Goodwin scores and assists, McGree returns

Craig Goodwin scored his sixth goal of the season and registered an assist in Saudi Arabia while Riley McGree made a timely return from injury in another big week for our Aussies Abroad.

Subway Socceroos

Starting in the Saudi Pro League, where Craig Goodwin (cap #562) played 90 minutes, scored a goal, and registered an assist as Al-Wehda beat Al-Riyadh SC 3-1 on Monday to move into eighth position on the table. 

They face Al-Shabab on Sunday at 5am (AEDT).

In the English Championship, where it was a great day out for our trio of Middlesbrough Socceroos as they moved to within three points of the play-off places with a 1-0 win over West Brom on Sunday.

Riley McGree (cap #609) made his long-awaited return from injury, coming on in the 79th minute for his first minutes since October 10 after being named in Grahams Arnold's Socceroos Asian Cup squad on Friday.

Tom Glover also made his first Championship start in goal and kept a clean sheet. After keeping a clean sheet against Port Vale in mid-week and an injury to first-choice keeper Seny Dieng, Glover retained his spot.

Sammy Silvera (cap #634) also started up front and played 79 minutes, shifting centrally from his natural role out wide.

Silvera also started and played 92 minutes while McGree came off the bench in the 70th minute and Glover retained his spot in the goal as they lost 1-0 to Rotherham on Wednesday.

They face Huddersfield on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT).

Elsewhere in the English Championship, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) and Massimo Luongo (cap #571) both played full matches as Ipswich Town lost 4-0 to Leeds United on Sunday.

Ipswich had never lost by such a margin in Kieran McKenna's time in charge, but Leeds emphatically narrowed the gap between themselves and the automatic promotion places.

Burgess played a full game while Luongo came off the bench in the 80th minute as Ipswich drew 1-1 with Leicester on Wednesday.

Ipswich face QPR on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT).

Harry Souttar (cap #606) also came off the bench in Leicester City's 3-0 win over Rotherham on Sunday. He was an unused substitute against Ipswich on Wednesday. They face Cardiff City on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT).  

Over to League One, where recent call-up Gethin Jones played two full games for Bolton Wanderers in wins against Leyton Orient and Lincoln City on Sunday and Wednesday. 

He is likely to feature again on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT) against Fleetwood.

Alexander Robertson (cap #630) also played 64 minutes over the weekend while Kusini Yengi (cap #638) was an unused substitute as Portsmouth drew 1-1 with Fleetwood on Sunday.

Robertson also played 52 minutes on Wednesday while Yengi came off the bench in the 73rd minute as they lost 2-1 on Wednesday against Bristol Rovers.

They face Exeter City on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT).

Over to Scotland, where Kye Rowles (cap #622) played a full game while Nathaniel Atkinson (cap #620) also started and came off in the 74th minute as Heart of Midlothian FC beat St Mirren 2-0 on Sunday. Olyroo Calem Nieuwenhof also came off the bench in the 66th minute. 

Keanu Baccus (cap #628) played a full game for St Mirren as well.

He played another 90 minutes on Thursday as St Mirren lost 1-0 to Kilmarnock.

Rowles also played a full game alongside Atkinson and Nieuwenhof as Hearts secured a last minute 1-0 win over Hibernian on Thursday. Lewis Miller (cap #635) and Martin Boyle (cap #599) also played the full match while James Jeggo (cap #601) came off the bench in the 84th minute.

Boyle had the opportunity to put Hibs into the lead when they were awarded a penalty but he sprawled a tremendous tipped save from the goalkeeper to deny the Hibs talisman's effort onto the upright.

Ryan McGowan (cap #546) also played a full game for St Johnstone in a 2-1 loss to Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Over to Belgium, where Jordan Bos (cap #632) played 90 minutes for Westerlo as they made it four matches without defeat with a 2-2 draw against Antwerp on Sunday.

He played another 90 minutes on Wednesday in a 3-0 win against RWDM.

Jason Davidson (cap #545) also played a full game for KAS Eupen and scored a goal on Sunday as they lost 2-1 to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

He also featured on Wednesday with another 90 minute display in a 3-0 loss against Oud-Heverlee Leuven.

Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) played another full game for Standard Liege on Thursday in a 1-1 draw with STVV.

In Italy's Serie B, Alessandro Circati (cap #637) played a full game for Parma as they beat Ternana 3-1 on Sunday to remain four points clear at the top of the table. 

He also played another full game on Wednesday in a 2-0 win over Brescia.

In India, Dimitri Petratos (cap #593) played a full game and scored a goal for Mohun Bagan while Jason Cummings (cap #626) also started and played 62 minutes in a 4-1 loss to Goa on Sunday. Fellow Aussie Brendan Hamill also played a full game for Mohun Bagan.

Petratos played another full game while Cummings was substituted in the 62nd minute as they lost 1-0 to Kerala Blasters on Thursday.

Subway Olyroos

Adrian Segecic came off the bench in the 82nd minute for FC Dordrecht in a 2-1 loss to FC Emmem on Sunday.

In the Championship, Nectarios Triantis was an unused substitute for Sunderland in a 3-0 loss to Coventry on Sunday. He came off the bench in the 89th minute in a 1-0 win against Hull City on Wednesday. Sunderland face Rotherham on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT).

In League One, Nicholas Bilokapic was in goal for Peterborough United FC in a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury Town on Sunday. He also featured in a 2-2 draw with Reading on Wednesday. They face Barnsley on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT).

As mentioned above, Calem Nieuwenhof came off the bench in the 66th minute for Hearts in a 2-0 win over St Mirren on Sunday and he played a full game on Thursday as they beat Hibs 1-0.

Other Aussies

  • In Italy, Cristian Volpato came off the bench in the 60th minute as Sassuolo lost 2-1 to Genoa on Saturday. They face Milan on Sunday at 4am (AEDT).

  • Ryan Edwards came off the bench in the 68th minute for SD Amorebieta on Friday as they lost 2-1 to Alcorcon in Spain’s second division.

  • In England's League One, Ashley Maynard-Brewer was in goal for Charlton Athletic on Sunday as they drew 1-1 with Burton. He was in goal again on Tuesday in a 1-0 loss to Leyton Orient. They return to action on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT) against Bristol Rovers.

  • Jack Iredale played 88 minutes for Bolton Wanderers in a 3-2 loss to Exeter City in League One on Sunday. He was an unused substitute on Wednesday in a 1-0 win over Lincoln City. They face Fleetwood on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT).

  • In League Two, Dean Bouzanis was in goal for Sutton United in a 2-0 loss to Mansfield Town on Sunday. He was in goal again on Wednesday and kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win against AFC Wimbledon. They face Gillingham on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT).
