Aussies Abroad: Goodwin assists Al-Wehda win, Irvine in Championship classic

Craig Goodwin set up the opener as Al-Wehda claimed a crucial three points as third met fourth in Saudi Pro League.

Goodwin’s club, Al-Wehda, went on secure a 2-0 win against Al-Ahli after the Socceroos attacker sent the Red Giant on their way with an assist for Brazilian front man Luis Gustavo to score in the 28th minute at King Abdul Aziz Stadium.

The home side extended the lead in the closing stages when French striker Youssouf Niakate netted his 10th goal of the season in the 82nd minute to secure the win for the Knights of Mecca.

The result takes head coach Jose Daniel Carreño’s fourth-placed side level on points with their opponents with 33 points from 18 matches, behind them only on goal difference.

Goodwin has started all 18 matches in the 2019/20 campaign, and has scored four goals, since his move from Hyundai A-League outfir Adelaide United in July 2019.

Meanwhile, fellow Green and Gold midfielder Jackson Irvine was involved in a classic in the English Championship in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Hull City led Swansea City on three occasions but ended up needing a 95th-minute equaliser to salvage a point in a remarkable 4-4 draw.

The Tigers went ahead though Leo da Silva Lopes’ sixth-minute effort but Wayne Routledge restored parity seven minutes later to take the sides into half-time at 1-1 at KC Stadium.

Marcus Maddison put the hosts back in front on 50 minutes, a lead that Kyle Naughton cancelled out five minutes later, and Mallik Wilks put Grant McCann’s side up once again on 61 minutes.

Jordan Garrick grabbed the Swans’ third equaliser on 77 minutes before Liverpool loanee Rhian Brewster looked to have snatched an unlikely win for the visitors when he struck in the 84th minute.

But Irvine’s team fought back themselves deep into stoppage time as Tom Eaves’ strike dented Swansea’s push for the playoffs, while Hull remain in 15th position.

Aziz Behich was an unused substitute as İstanbul Başakşehir went top of the Turkish Super Lig with a 1-0 win against crosstown rivals Besiktas.

Former Chelsea striker Demba Ba’s 50th-minute goal proved decisive for the Owls at Fatih Terim Stadium. Title rivals Sivasspor and Trabzonspor are in close pursuit of Okan Buruk’s side with games in hand.
