In the English Premier League first, and goalkeeper Mat Ryan conceded two goals for the second week running. A late Glenn Murray double rescued a 2-2 draw with new kids on the block Fulham.
Meanwhile, at Everton Aaron Mooy’s Huddersfield shared at the points in a 1-1 draw.
In the Championship and for captain Mile Jedinak’s Aston Villa side it was a tough outing. Down by three goals at half-time, they’d ultimately lose 4-1 to Sheffield United.
Massimo Luongo played a full match in QPR’s 0-0 draw with Birmingham, while Jackson Irvine didn’t make the team sheet in Hull’s 2-1 loss to Derby.
Bailey Wright’s Bristol City play at home against Blackburn tonight at 10:30am (AEST).
And finally, to League One and Kenneth Dougall spent a full ninety minutes screening in Barnsley’s 2-1 win over Gillingham.
Jamie Maclaren played more than an hour for Hibernian but was unable to affect the scoreline as his side went down 2-1 to Livingston. Fellow Aussie Mark Milligan wasn’t on the team sheet.
It was a much happier time out for Ben Garrucio’s Hearts side, who rolled St Mirren 4-1 at home. Oliver Bozanic was an unused substitute in the victory.
The biggest match in Scottish football is yet to come: the Old Firm derby, on Sunday night (AEST). Tom Rogic is struggling with injury and is in doubt, while Daniel Arzani is available for selection.
Into the European mainland and Trent Sainsbury made his first appearance in PSV colours, off the bench in the side’s 6-1 demolition of Willem II. Newest signing Aziz Behich didn’t make the team sheet.
John Iredale didn’t feature for SC Heerenveen, while Denis Genreau’s PEC Zwolle play Ajdin Hrustic’s Groningen tonight, at 8:15pm (AEST).
Across the rest of Europe, there were just two men from Graham Arnold’s squad of 31 to make an appearance. One was Robbie Kruse, who VfL Bochum side drew 2-2 with Paderborn and Kruse picked up an assist.
The other was Aleksandar Susnjar, who played a full match with his MSK Zilina in the Slovak Super Liga. They went down 1-0 to Slovan Bratislava.
There is plenty more happening tonight in terms of Aussies likely to take the pitch. Tomi Juric, Awer Mabil, Mustafa Amini, Milos Degenek, Alex Gersbach, and Danny Vukovic are all set to play Sunday night/Monday morning (AEST).
Nagoya Grampus have fought their way out of the J-League relegation zone, and now Mitchell Langerak’s side has gone one step closer to securing safety with a huge 6-1 win over Jubilo Iwata. Langerak played a full game in goals.
Elsewhere in Japan, and it was late heartbreak for Mitchell Duke. He played 65 minutes but wasn’t able to do enough in that time as his Shimizu S-Pulse side went down 2-1. The winning goal came five minutes into injury time.
In the Saudi Pro League, Matt Jurman played 90 minutes in his side’s 1-0 defeat to Al Shabab.
