Aussies Abroad: Mabil gets brace and assist, Metcalfe scores and Irvine grabs two assists

There were some standout performances from Aussies Abroad as many start to build their credentials at title challengers across Europe's leagues, ahead of the October international window. 

Subway Socceroos

Awer Mabil (cap #597) put on a show for Grasshopper in the Swiss Super League, bagging two goals and an assist in a 3-0 victory over Yverdon on Sunday, in what was his first league start since joining the club.

Jackson Irvine (cap #568) and Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) put in fine displays for St. Pauli in their 5-1 smashing of 1.FC Nurnberg in 2. Bundesliga. Irvine played a full game, notching two assists, while Metcalfe came off the bench at the hour and scored in stoppage time.

Garang Kuol (cap #627) got the assist for FC Volendam’s only goal in a 1-0 Eredivisie victory over FC Utrecht on Saturday morning.

Matthew Ryan (cap #555) was in goal for AZ Almaar’s 2-1 win against Ajax in Eredivisie on Sunday night to remain unbeaten in second spot behind leaders PSV Eindhoven.

Sam Silvera (cap #634) came on in the 75th minute of Middlesborough’s 4-0 Sunderland win on Saturday night in the EFL Championship, while Tom Glover was an unused substitute. Riley McGree (cap #609) missed the match.

Harry Souttar (cap #606) made his first appearance of the Championship season playing 85 minutes as Leicester City downed Stoke City 2-0 on Sunday morning. The towering defender completed 80 passes, won his only tackle and made a block against his former team.

Elsewhere in the EFL Championship, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) returned to action for Ipswich Town in their 4-2 victory over Preston North End on Sunday. Burgess made two interceptions and six recoveries. Massimo Luongo (cap #571) also played 75 minutes for the Blues.

There were six Socceroos in action on Sunday morning in the Scottish Premiership as Hearts and Hibernian played out a thrilling Edinburgh derby 2-2 draw.

Kye Rowles (cap #622)Cameron Devlin (cap #625) and Olyroo Calem Nieuwenhof started for Hearts, and Martin Boyle (cap #599)James Jeggo (cap #601) and Lewis Miller started for Hibs.

Also in the Scottish Premiership, Ryan Strain (cap #624) and Keanu Baccus (cap #628) went down 3-0 for St. Mirren against Rangers on Sunday. Strain was sent off before the half-hour mark, while Baccus played 70 minutes.

In the EFL League One, Ashley Maynard-Brewer started in goal for Charlton Athletic against Kenneth Dougall (cap #608)’s Blackpool as the teams drew 2-2 on Sunday.

Indian Super League Socceroos duo Dimitri Petratos (cap # 593) and Jason Cummings (cap #626) both scored in the first half of Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s 3-1 win against Cehnnaiyin FC on Monday morning.

Dylan McGowan (cap #590) played a full game for Hamilton Academical in the Scottish League One as they drew 0-0 with Falkirk.

Jordan Bos (cap #632) came on in the 79th minute of Westerlo’s 1-0 Kortrijk win in Belgium’s First Division A on Sunday.

In another Belgian top-flight fixture, Aiden O’Neil (cap #629) came in the 81st minute of Standard Liege’s 2-1 victory against Club Brugge on Sunday.

Jason Davidson (cap #545) completed a full match for Eupen in their 4-1 loss to Royal Antwerp on Monday in Belgium as well.

Craig Goodwin (cap #562) was taken off at halftime for Al-Wehda as they drew 1-1 with Al-Fayha on Sunday in the Saudi Pro League.

Brad Smith (cap #575) came on in the 88th minute of Houston Dynamo’s 5-1 flogging of Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer on Sunday.

Mitchell Duke (cap #559) played 85 minutes as Machida Zelvia drew 3-3 with Ventforet Kofu in J. League 2.

Denis Genreau (cap #610) played a full game for Toulouse in a 1-1 draw with Brest in Ligue 1 on Monday. The midfielder created a chance as well as five passes into the final third.

In EFL League One, Nicholas Bilokapic was the goalkeeper for Peterborough’s 2-0 victory over Lincoln on Sunday.

Calem Nieuwenof played a full game for Hearts in their 2-2 draw with Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Adrian Segecic picked up an assist as FC Dordrecht smashed Cambuur 5-2 in Eerste Divisie on Saturday morning.
 

Other Aussies

Cristian Volpato remained a substitute as Sassuolo drew 1-1 with Lecce on Saturday morning in Serie A.

Liam Chipperfield played 19 minutes of FC Dion’s 3-0 win against Wil on Saturday morning in the Swiss Challenge League.

Tass Mourdoukoutas helped guide York City into a Canadian Premier League play-off spot with a 2-1 win against Vancouver FC on Saturday morning.

Patrick Flottmann stayed on the bench as Seongnam FC defeated Chungnam Asan FC in the K-League 2 on Saturday night.

John Iredale also wasn’t used for Wehen Wiesbaden’s 1-1 draw against Hambuger SV in Germany’s 2. Bundesliga.

Dean Bouzanis played well in goal for Sutton United as they won 4-0 against Walsall on Sunday morning in EFL League Two.

In EFL League One, Kusini Yengi was subbed on in the 90th minute to help Portsmouth see out a 2-0 win against Port Vale on Sunday.

Elsewhere in League One, Jack Iredale played all of Bolton’s shock 3-1 defeat to Carlisle United on Sunday.

Zak Gilsenan came on in the 89th minute as Blackburn Rovers smashed Queens Park Rangers 4-0 on Sunday in the EFL Championship.

Anthony Kalik was substituted at halftime in Hajduk Split’s 1-0 loss to Rijeka on Sunday, dropping to second place in Croatia’s HNL.
