Aussies Abroad: Socceroos face off in Scotland, Belgium

The Aussies Abroad got their first official taste of continental action for this season with a Subway Socceroo pitted against the European champions, while Aussies went head-to-head in Asia.

Plenty more action will occur over the weekend as players look to earn their spot in the Socceroos’ October window squad. 

Jordan Bos could return in Belgium against Aiden O'Neill, while five Socceroos are likely to be on the pitch as Hearts face St Mirren in Scotland.

Subway Socceroos

In the mid-week Championship fixtures on Wednesday, Riley McGree (cap #609) and Sammy Silvera (cap #634) both started Middlesbrough’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday as Tom Glover remained on the bench.

The Middlesbrough Aussies face a tough test against former Premier League regulars Southampton Sunday at 12am (AEST), eager to get their team’s season back on track.

Cameron Burgess (cap #633) got through all of Ipswich Town’s 1-0 victory over Southampton on Wednesday, while Massimo Luongo (cap #571) played 33 minutes as a substitute, keeping the side in second.

Burgess was imperious at the back for Ipswich, making seven clearances and an interception to contribute to his fourth clean sheet of the season.

Ipswich have a chance to go top when they host Blackburn on Sunday at 12 am (AEST), following a flying start to life in the Championship. 

Alexander Robertson (cap #630) continued his unbeaten run with Portsmouth, playing 78 minutes in a 3-2 victory against Barnsley to stay top of the competition in the EFL League One. Robertson’s Portsmouth host Lincoln on Sunday at 12 am (AEST), eager to end a run of two scoreless draws in a row against their opponents.

Ashley Maynard-Brewer will look to force his way back into Charlton Athletic coach Michael Appleton’s plans ahead of Sunday’s clash with Wycombe Wanderers at 12 am (AEST) in League One as well.

Kenneth Dougall (cap #608) is also in League One action at the same time, as Blackpool take on Reading, while Callum Elder’s (cap #614) Derby County travel to Carlisle. 

The AFC Cup also got underway on Wednesday, which saw three Aussies clash as Mohan Bagan SG battered Odisha FC 4-0.

For Mohan Bagan SG, Dimitri Petratos (cap #593) notched two goals in a top performance.

Jason Cummings (cap #626) made a lively impression off the bench against Odisha, but couldn’t impact the scoreboard.

The Indian Super League begins this weekend as Petratos and Cummings take on Punjab FC for Mohun on Sunday at 12:30am (AEST).

Socceroos captain Maty Ryan (cap #555) started in between the sticks for AZ Almaar’s Europa Conference League shock 4-3 defeat to Zrinjski Mostar on Friday.

He will be in Eredivisie action again when they travel to PEC Zwolle on Monday at 12:45 am (AEST), hoping to extend his perfect start to the league season with AZ.

Elsewhere in the Dutch top-flight, Garang Kuol (cap #627) will be looking to put in another positive display following last week's goal for FC Volendam when they face Heracles on Sunday at 12:30 am (AEST).

Over to Scotland, where Kye Rowles (cap #622), Cameron Devlin (cap #625), and Nathaniel Atkinson (cap #620) and Olyroo Calem Nieuwenhof could feature for Heart of Midlothian FC when they face Keanu Baccus (cap #628) and Ryan Strain's (cap #624) St Mirren on Sunday at 12am (AEST).

Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership, Martin Boyle (cap #599) is likely to feature again alongside James Jeggo (cap #601) as Hibernian face Ryan McGowan's (cap #546) St Johnstone on Sunday at 12 am (AEST). Olyroo Lewis Miller could also feature.

Dylan McGowan (cap #590) will be eager to continue his strong start to Scotland’s League One season when his Hamilton Academical host Queen of the South on Sunday at 12 am.

In Germany, Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) will be looking to follow on from his wonder strike last week with another positive display when St. Pauli face Schalke on Sunday at 4:30 am (AEST) in the 2. Bundesliga. 

In Italy's Serie B, Alessandro Circati is expected to start again for Parma when they face Sampdoria on Monday at 12:15 am (AEST).

In Switzerland, Awer Mabil (cap #597) could feature for Grasshopper Club Zürich as they face St Gallen on Sunday at 4:30 am (AEST).

In the Belgian First Division A, Jordan Bos (cap #632) could return for KVC Westerlo after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix when they face Aiden O'Neill (cap #629) and his Standard Liege side on Saturday at 4:45 am (AEST).

Jason Davidson (cap #545) will be eager to end a run of two straight defeats when his Eupen travel to Belgian First Division leaders Gent at 3:15 am on Monday (AEST). 

Denis Genreau (cap #610) was an unused substitute when Toulouse drew 1-1 with Union St. Gilloise in the Europa League on Friday.

Grenreau will be involved again on Sunday for Toulouse’s Ligue 1 clash with Lens on Sunday at 11 pm (AEST). 

Milos Degenek (cap #585) was in line for a giant-killing on Wednesday as his FK Crvena Zvezda went into halftime 1-0 up against Man City in the UEFA Champions League.

However, the reigning champions fought back to claim a 3-1 victory - Degenek played the final eight minutes.

Degenek won’t take the pitch this weekend after Zvezda’s fixture with TSC Blacka Topola was postponed.

In Norway, Nick D’Agostino (cap #621) could appear for Viking FK against Sandefjord on Monday at 1:00am (AEST) as the league leaders look to maintain their buffer at the top of the Eliteserien. Subway Olyroo Patrick Yazbek is also expected to feature.

In Qatar, Trent Sainsbury (cap #574) may feature for Al-Wakrah SC against Al-Markhiya on Monday at 3:00am (AEST) in the Qatar Stars League.

In Saudi Arabia, Craig Goodwin (cap #562) will be looking to continue his impressive return to the Saudi Pro League after scoring on debut last week when Al Wedah take on Abha Club on Saturday at 4 am (AEST).

Over to Japan, where Thomas Deng (cap #598) could feature in the J. League 1 on Saturday at 3 pm (AEST) when Albirex Niigata host Yokohama FC. 

Mitch Langerak (cap #566) will hope to help push J. League 1 side Nagoya Grampus towards continental qualification on Saturday at 5 pm (AEST) when they do battle with Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo. 

Mitch Duke (cap #559) is set to feature for Machida Zelvia against V-Varen Nagasaki on Saturday at 6 pm (AEST), as the side continue their title push in the Japanese second division.

Harrison Delbridge (cap #623) played on Tuesday night as Incheon United out-scored Kevin Muscat’s Yokohama F. Marinos 4-2 in the AFC Champions League. Delbridge's United remain on the cusp of the championship play-off as they second-last Gangwon FC at 5:30 pm (AEST) on Sunday. 

In the United States, Brad Smith (cap #575) made a good impression off the bench for Houston Dynamo, picking up an assist in their 4-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer on Wednesday. Smith could feature for Houston Dynamo on Sunday 10:30 am (AEST) when they host St Louis. Dynamo are in fifth while St Louis leads the Western Conference.

 

Subway Olyroos

Starting in the Premier League, Tyrese Francois could appear on the bench for Fulham when they travel to Crystal Palace on Sunday at 12 am (AEST).

Calem Nieuwenhof is another who could make an impact for Hearts on Sunday in the Scottish Premier League against St. Mirren at 12am.  

As mentioned, Patrick Yazbek could appear for table toppers Viking in Norway on Monday morning. 

Over to the Championship, Nectarios Triantis could feature for Sunderland on Sunday at 12am (AEST) when they play Cardiff away.

In League One, Cameron Peupion could be in action for Cheltenham Town when they face Stevenage on Sunday at 12 am (AEST).

Nicholas Bilokapic kept a clean sheet in Peterborough United’s dominant 3-0 win against strugglers Cheltenham on Wednesday. The Posh travel to Bolton on Sunday at 12 am (AEST) with the teams level on points in the top half of the table ahead of that one. 

In League Two, Jay Rich-Baghuelou will likely play for Accrington Stanley when they face Tranmere Rovers on Sunday at 12 am (AEST). 

Subway Young Socceroos/U18

Adrian Segecic played week in FC Dordrecht's 1-0 victory against TOP Oss and will want to impress again when his team play Jong AZ Alkmaar on Saturday at 4 am (AEST).

In Norway, Keegan Jelacic could get some minutes for Stabaek when they travel to Aalesund on Sunday at 2 am (AEST).

  • In League One, Jack Iredale could be in action for Bolton when they face Peterborough on Sunday at 12am (AEST).
  • In League Two, Dean Bouzanis is likely to be on the bench for Sutton United FC when they take on MK Dons on Sunday at 12 am (AEST).
  • In Serie A, Cristian Volpato could feature for Sassuolo when they host the challenge of giants Juventus on Sunday at 12 am (AEST).
  • In Germany's 2. Bundesliga, John Iredale could feature for Wehen Wiesbaden against Elversberg on Saturday at 9 pm (AEST).
  • In Croatia, Anthony Kalik may feature for Hajduk Split as they host NK Lokomotiva on Sunday at 3:15 am (AEST).
  • Tete Yengi is likely to get on the field in Finland for Kuopion Palloseura when they travel to FC Inter Turku on Saturday at 9 pm (AEST). Yegni's KuPS are four points off the top in the championship group.

  • Shane Lowry was one of the better performers in Johor Darul Za'zim's 1-0 defeat against Kawasaki Frontale in the AFC Asian Champions League, but won't feature again until next week in the Malaysian Liga Super. 
  • Panagiotis Makrillos played a full game in a 1-0 loss to Seoul E-Land on Wednesday in K-League 2 for Cheongju FC and will hope for better fortunes at 2:30 pm (AEST) on Saturday against Patrick Flottmann's high-flying Seongnam FC.
