Socceroos Abroad: Irvine and Metcalfe contribute in St Pauli loss, Devlin and Luongo score

Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe were involved in the goals again for St Pauli but their side failed to regain top spot in the 2. Bundesliga while Cameron Devlin and Massimo Luongo also scored elsewhere.

Starting in Germany's 2. Bundesliga, where Jackson Irvine (cap #568) played another full game and scored a consolation goal as St Pauli lost 4-3 to mid-table side SV Elversberg on Sunday and failed to regain top spot in from Holstein Kiel.

Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) also assisted St Pauli's second goal but was substituted in the 72nd minute.

Holstein Kiel claimed the top spot following a dominant 4-0 victory over Osnabruck on Saturday, throwing the pressure on Pauli with just five games left in the season. However, Pauli were not up to the task and had to endure their first home defeat in a year.

John Iredale (cap #640) also came off the bench at half time in the German second division for Wehen Wiesbaden as they lost 2-0 to Dusseldorf on Saturday.

Over to the EFL Championship, where Massimo Luongo (cap #571) played 77 minutes and scored a goal while Cameron Burgess (cap #633) played a full game as Ipswich Town drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough on Sunday. 

The draw puts Ipswich one point clear at the top of the table with three games to play after Leeds United were beaten by Blackburn while Leicester City lost 1-0 at Plymouth Argyle.

Samuel Silvera (cap #634) also started for Boro and played 69 minutes. 

In EFL League One, Gethin Jones (cap #639) played a full game for Bolton on Sunday as they postponed Kusini Yengi's (cap #638) Portsmouth promotion celebrations with a 1-1 draw. Yengi came off the bench in the 58th minute. 

The result means Pompey now need a single point to confirm promotion and two for the title ahead of Tuesday’s visit of Barnsley.

Over to Scotland, where Cameron Devlin (cap #625) played 66 minutes and scored a goal for Heart of Midlothian on Sunday while Nathaniel Atkinson (cap #620) and Kye Rowles (cap #622) both played full games in a 4-2 win over Livingston.

Hearts stay 11 points clear in third and guarantee at least fourth, which means European football returns to Tynecastle next term.

Keanu Baccus (cap #628) also played 83 minutes and Ryan Strain (cap #624) came off the bench in the 23rd minute as St Mirren lost 3-0 to league leaders Celtic on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Martin Boyle (cap #599) played 80 minutes for Hibernian in a 1-1 draw with Motherwell while Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played a full game for St Johnstone in a 2-0 loss to Kilmarnock on Sunday.

In Scotland’s League One, Dylan McGowan (cap #590) played a full game for Hamilton Academical on Sunday in a 2-0 loss to league leaders Falkirk.

In the Eredivisie, Mathew Ryan (cap #555) was in goal for AZ Alkmaar as they overturned back-to-back defeats with a 3-2 win over RKC Waalwijk on Sunday. AZ are five points off FC Twente, who occupy third. 

Elsewhere in the Dutch top flight, Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589) played 90 minutes for Heracles Almelo in a 2-0 loss to SC Heereveen on Sunday.

In the Swiss Super League, Awer Mabil (cap #597) continued his return from injury, coming off the bench in the 71st minute for Grasshopper in a 1-0 loss to Lugano on Sunday.

Alessandro Circati (cap #637) played 85 minutes on Sunday in Serie B for Parma as they beat Spezia 2-0 to return to winning ways after a loss and a draw in their last two matches. 

Fran Karacic (cap #607) played another full game for Rudes in a 3-1 loss to Slaven Belupo on Saturday in Croatia 1. Division.

James Holland (cap #508) played a full game for Austria Wien in the Austrian Bundesliga relegation play-offs and captained the side as they beat 1-0 Wolfsberg on Sunday.

In Norway, Nick D'Agostino (cap #621) started and played 62 minutes for Viking FK while Patrick Yazbek (cap #641) also started and played 85 minutes before being replaced by Gianni Stensness (cap #617) in a 1-1 draw with Brann on Sunday.

In Japan, Thomas Deng (cap #598) played another full game for Albirex Niigata on Saturday as they drew 1-1 with Consadole Sapporo.

In K League 1, Harrison Delbridge (cap #623) was an unused substitute for Incheon United on Sunday as they drew 1-1 with Daegu.

Brad Smith (cap #575) came off the bench in the 77th minute for Houston Dynamo on Sunday in a 2-1 win against Minnesota in Major League Soccer.

In League One, Nicholas Bilokapic was on the bench again for Peterborough United in a 5-0 loss to Oxford United on Sunday.

In the Danish Superligaen, Tyrese Francois played 82 minutes for Vejle Boldklub on Sunday as they lost 2-1 to Randers in the Danish Superliga relegation play-offs.

In the Polish second division, Louis D'Arrigo played 68 minutes in a 3-1 win over Bruk-Bet Termalica Nieciecza to overtake Arka Gdynia and move top of the table by a point.
