Wilkinson & McGowan to join Socceroos in Sydney & Jeddah as Rowles & Rogic are ruled out

The Socceroos’ squad for this month’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ qualification fixtures against Japan (home) and Saudi Arabia (away) has been updated further.

Defender Kye Rowles has been ruled out of the window after he tested positive to COVID-19 prior to arriving in camp, while attacking midfielder Tom Rogic will also miss the window due to injury.

Following the withdrawals of Rowles and Rogic, experienced Sydney FC captain Alex Wilkinson will come into the camp in Sydney to provide defensive cover for the Sydney match.

Wilkinson, who has represented Australia on 16 occasions and played for the nation at the FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil in 2014, will return to club duties with the Sky Blues after the home match.

Meanwhile, Kuwait-based defender Ryan McGowan will link up with Australia in the Middle East for the second game of the window against Saudi Arabia next Tuesday. McGowan, who has been a regular member of the Socceroos over the past year, will travel direct to Jeddah to prepare for the game.

The Socceroos’ match against Japan on Thursday evening (kick-off 8.10pm AEDT) will be broadcast live and free in Australia on Network 10 and simulcast on 10 Play. Tickets are available from Ticketek.
