Vukovic: Ryan's save was one of the best I’ve seen

Australian Goalkeeper Danny Vukovic claims Mat Ryan’s recent save for Brighton was one of the best he’s ever seen.

Speaking recently with Socceroos.com.au Vukovic revealed he keeps in regular contact with Ryan and even spent a brief spell under his roof.

“I was coming back from injury after Christmas when I stayed with Maty,” said Vukovic.

“The save against Southampton was phenomenal.

“I’ve not seen many better in my entire career or life.”

The connection between the two runs long with both graduating from Westfields Sports High School and under the guidance of goalkeeping coach John Crawley.

Despite living in different countries, the pair remain close and have become Socceroos teammates with both making Australia’s 2018 World Cup squad.

Vukovic described Ryan's work rate as impeccable, adding that he earns every accolade he receives.

“He deserves all the success he gets because he works so hard,” claims Vukovic.

“He’s definitely the most professional player I’ve worked with.”

Working alongside such professionalism enables Vukovic to absorb as much as possible in every training session.

After being part of several Socceroos camps together, Vukovic now knows first-hand just how good Ryan is and believes he can get even better.

“His distribution is one of the best in world football,” explained Vukovic.

“He’s a two footed player too, which is uncommon for goalkeepers.

“It’s something that can really help him progress further.”

Experiencing the national team set up has been a motivating factor in Vukovic’s return to football following a lengthy lay off.

Therefore the pride in representing your country is not something that the former Sydney FC, Glory and Mariners keeper takes lightly.

And after missing almost 12 months of football with injury and COVID-19 he now has one target set firmly in his sights.

“For me, the Socceroos is the pinnacle of what it is to be a professional footballer,” Vukovic said.

“Ultimately my goal is to make another World Cup.”

Ryan’s incredible save against Southampton has been seen globally with memes depicting just how extraordinary his efforts were.

The Australian number one has been an integral part of Brighton’s side in all three of his seasons at the club, dispelling talk that his lack of height will stunt further progress.

When asked if Ryan’s moment of brilliance surprised Vukovic he did not hesitate to answer.

“Not at all. What he lacks in height, he makes up in speed and power."

“He is such a powerful athlete.”
