Top 10 best Socceroos club moments in 2021

From the highs of scoring a brace to win the League One Play-Off Final to debuting for a boyhood club, there has been plenty of Socceroos club moments to savour in 2021.

As the year draws to a close and we reminisce on some of our Socceroos' best club moments, it’s time for a trip down memory lane.

Here are the top 10 Socceroos club moments of the year. 

1. Kenny Dougall's brace fires Blackpool into the Championship

In terms of individual achievements, it's hard to look past Kenny Dougall firing Blackpool back to the English second tier for the first time since 2015. 

Dougall stole the show at Wembley with two superb strikes in the League One Play-Off Final as his Blackpool FC came from behind to defeat Lincoln 2-1 and secure promotion to this season's Championship.

The 28-year-old became the first Australian to score in a club game at Wembley as he capped off a remarkable 2020/21 season with Man of the Match honours in the Play-Off Final.

2. Mat Ryan debuts for Arsenal

In February, Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan has made his debut for Arsenal, the English Premier League club he supported as a kid.

The 28-year-old was signed on loan from Brighton in January after falling out of favour at the Seagulls.

Ryan went on to make three appearances for Arsenal before signing for Real Sociedad in La Liga.

3. Milos Degenek secures a fourth-straight league title with Red Star 

Milos Degenek helped to seal a fourth-straight Serbian SuperLiga title for Red Star in 2020/21 - a third that the Socceroos defender had been involved in. 

The 27-year-old also notched up 100 appearances for his boyhood club during the same campaign. 

Since Degenek joined Red Star in 2018, he has played in the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League, and become an established member of the Socceroos squad.

4. Callum Elder helps Hull back up to the Championship

Callum Elder played a key role in Hull's return to the Championship, scoring one goal and setting up a further 10 in 42 appearances for the Tigers during the 2020/21 season.


Elder helped to end Hull City's long 55-year wait for a league title after guaranteeing top spot in Sky Bet League One with one game remaining. 

5. Nikita Rukavytsya finishes as top goalscorer of the Israeli Premier League

In the 2020–21 Israeli Premier League season, Maccabi Haifa won the league and Nikita Rukavytsya won the golden boot for the second season in a row with a total of 19 goals.

The 34-year-old's strong form in front of goal has become a habit over the past three years. 

In 2020, his incredible record in the final third saw him finish fourth in fan voting for the AFC's Best International Player of 2020. 

6. Martin Boyle and Jackson Irvine secure historic league finish with Hibernian

Socceroos duo Martin Boyle and Jackson Irvine both helped Hibernian FC secure the club a third-placed finish in the Scottish Premiership in the 2020/21 season. 

Boyle contributed with an impressive all-competitions record of 15 goals and 11 assists in 45 games. His form in the final third was integral in inspiring Jack Ross' side to the club's best league finish since 2004-05.

Irvine also featured 18 times for the club over five months before switching to St.Pauli in Bundesliga 2. 

7. Jamie Maclaren became the quickest player to reach 100 A-League goals 
 

During the 2020/21 A-League season, Jamie Maclaren became the fastest player in Australian national league history to net 100 goals – taking just 144 games to do so.

Maclaren's form last season helped Melbourne City clinch a Premiership and Championship double. 

The 28-year-old was also named the PFA Men's Player of the Year for scoring 25 goals in 24 games.  

8. Ajdin Hrustic scores his first Eintracht Frankfurt goal in remarkable fashion

Ajdin Hrustic scored his first Eintracht Frankfurt goal in stunning fashion during last season's 1-1 draw with Mainz. 

The Socceroos midfielder lost balance as his initial shot was blocked, but that did not stop him from pulling off an ingenious piece of skill.

As the ball bounced back in Hrustic's direction, he managed to scoop it up from the ground and launch it into the top corner. 


Frankfurt finished the season in fifth spot of the Bundesliga, just one point shy of VfL Wolfsburg in the final Champions League place. 

9. Rhyan Grant notches up 200th A-League appearances
 

During the 2020/21 A-League season, Socceroos defender Rhyan Grant notched up 200 A-League appearances for the Sky Blues more than 13 years after his debut. 

The 30-year-old marked his 200th game with a goal as he scored to help his side snap a winless streak with a 2-0 victory over Western United in March.

He became only the ninth player to reach 200 games in the competition’s history, with only 222-cap Alex Brosque making more appearances for Sydney FC. 

10. Denis Genreau establishes himself at Toulouse

Socceroos and Olyroos midfielder Denis Genreau has enjoyed a dream start to life at one of the biggest clubs in the second tier of French football. 

Since making the switch to Ligue 2, the former Macarthur FC and Melbourne City man has made 13 appearances with six starts in Ligue 2.
