While indeed it was the second instance in qualifying to the Round of 16 it was very much a tournament of firsts for the Green and Gold.

Here are all the relevant stats insights:

  • Australia have won consecutive World Cup matches for the first time, while progressing from the group stages of the competition for just the second time in six tournament appearances (also 2006).
  • With six points from the group stage it is also the Socceroos highest-ever points tally.
  • The Socceroos secured their fourth win overall at the FIFA World Cup.
  • Australia are the third team to progress from the first round group stage of the World Cup having both lost and conceded 4+ goals in their opening match of the tournament, after Yugoslavia in 1990 and Ukraine in 2006.
  • Australia have kept a clean sheet in consecutive World Cup matches for the first time. Indeed, they'd kept just one clean sheet in their first 17 matches in the competition before this run, which occurred back in 1974.
  • Mathew Leckie scored his 14th goal for Australia in all competitions (first at the World Cup), at least five more than any other player in the Socceroos World Cup squad.
  • Mathew Leckie has scored his first ever goal at the World Cup with today his ninth appearance in the competition.
  • Today’s appearances see Mathew Ryan and Mathew Leckie become Australia’s joint-highest appearance makers in World Cup history alongside Tim Cahill and Mark Bresciano (9 games).
  • For the first time in its history, Australia scored a goal in every group stage match. All three goals by Craig Goodwin, Mitch Duke and Leckie also all occurred from open play.

  •  Denmark have been eliminated at the group stages of the World Cup for just the second time (also 2010), while this is the first time they've lost consecutive group stage games at the tournament.
  • Denmark (10th in the FIFA World rankings) is highest-ranked team Australia has beaten at the FIFA World Cup.
  • Before the match, Australia had lost eight of their prior 11 games against European opposition at the World Cup, failing to keep a clean sheet in every single match. It is now their second win against European at the Finals, after defeating Serbia in 2-1 in 2010.
  • Against Tunisia, Graham Arnold became the first Australian to coach the national team to
victory in a FIFA World Cup match. He has since become the first Australian to guide a team to the knockout phase.
