Football community erupts as Olyroos 'shock the world' v Argentina

It will go down as one of the most famous nights in Australian football history.

Up against the 2008 Olympic Gold Medallists, the Olyroos produced a stunning 2-0 victory over Argentina in their first match at an Olympic Games in 13 years.

Western United’s Lachie Wales gave Australia the lead after finishing from close range in the 14th minute, before Melbourne City’s Marco Tilio became his country's youngest ever goalscorer at an Olympic Games when he curled home a superb strike with just his second touch in the 80th minute.

It capped off an incredible night for the Olyroos, who were resolute at the back all game under the leadership of captain and Player of the match, Thomas Deng.

While Deng was one of seven Socceroos to feature in the starting XI, the A-League Olyroos played a very prominent role with six players in the starting line up having  featured in the Australian league during the 2020-21 Season.

The football world was indeed dealt a shock.
