Socceroos in the A-League: Leckie double sinks Wanderers

Mathew Leckie continued his goalscoring run, bagging two first-half headed goals in Melbourne City's 3-1 away win over Western Sydney Wanderers.

In what was City's first back-to-back wins of the 2021/22 campaign, Leckie led from the front in a result that saw City go top of the A-League Men on Friday night.

The 31-year-old's first goal came somewhat fortuitously in the 36th minute when Tomas Meijas punched clearance was looped back into the box from Aiden O'Neil, with Leckie guiding a firm header that had too much power for the Wanderers shot-stopper.

The Socceroo completed his brace from a set-piece in the 42nd minute when Scott Jamieson’s whipped corner glanced off Leckie’s head at the front post and found its way into the net near the back post.

Fellow Socceroo Marco Tilio replaced Leckie in the 74th minute while league top-scorer Jamie MacLaren was solid in a full 90 minute performance despite missing a 61st minute penalty.

Midfiielder Connor Metcalfe was assured in his 88 minutes in the middle of the park.

It rounded out what was a fantastic week for Leckie, who also netted in Tuesday's thrilling 4-2 win over Newcastle Jets.

Leckie's Melbourne City don't have long to celebrate the win with their next match taking place on Tuesday evening at home against Adelaide United with kick off scheduled for 7.55pm (AEDT).
