Socceroo youngster re-signs with Italian giants

Australia young gun Chris Ikonomidis has pledged his future to Serie A club Lazio, signing a new five-year deal to remain in Italy.

Ikonomidis has been starring for the club’s youth side and was instrumental in their recent Italian Youth Cup win.

The 20-year-old’s performances have seen him included with the first team squad for a handful of matches but he has yet to make his senior debut with Lazio.

“Today is truly a special day that I will share with my teammates,” Ikonomidis said of the new deal on Lazio Style Channel.

“At Lazio I find myself very well. The club has a project that gives a chance to their young kids, so I am more than happy to stay here at Lazio.

“This year has been amazing, I personally have tried to improve in every aspect, and both coach [Simone] Inzaghi and the boss [Stefano] Pioli have help me grown.

“I feel ready for whatever the future holds for me in the colours Biancocelesti.”

Ikonomidis, who made his Socceroos debut in the most recent friendly against Macedonia, has also been included in the squad for this month’s World Cup qualifier against Kyrgyzstan.

Ange Postecoglou’s side is having a training camp in Dubai before the clash in Bishkek on June 16, the first step on the Road to Russia 2018.
