Ryan: We’re a long way from finishing the job

Australia might have just set a new record by winning its ninth consecutive FIFA World Cup Qualifier, but you wouldn’t know it by speaking to goalkeeper Mat Ryan.

Following last week's comprehensive 3 – 0 win over China, a focused Ryan was already looking ahead to Tuesday’s match against Vietnam.

“It’s nice to break these sorts of records but we’re definitely not going to rest our laurels on it,” explained Ryan.

“It was the first of ten games so as far as I’m concerned, it’s one down and nine to go.

“We’ll enjoy this victory but we’re a long way from finishing the job.”

While squad players who weren’t involved against China continued to train over the last few days, there was a clear focus on recovery and preservation of energy for those who were.

“Tuesday is a huge game for everybody,” said Ryan.

“We will be doing everything we can to recuperate and recover. It’s important we make use of the available facilities to be as fresh as possible for the match against Vietnam.”

Friday’s match was Ryan’s first appearance for Australia since moving to Spanish club Real Sociedad and the 29-year-old will be hoping another clean sheet will propel him into the La Liga side’s starting eleven.
