Subway Socceroos captain Maty Ryan will call the Stadio Olimpico home for the upcoming Serie A season after signing a one-year deal with AS Roma.
The 32-year-old joins the Giallorossi as a free agent after 18 months in the Eredivisie with AZ Alkmaar where he has agreed to a one-year contract for the 2024/25 campaign with an option reportedly for a second.
Ryan will compete for the number one spot alongside incumbent Serbian shot-stopper Mile Svilar and becomes the first Socceroo to ply his trade for the three-time Serie A champions now coached by Daniele De Rossi.
After struggling for game time at FC Copenhagen in Denmark, Ryan joined AZ after the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and thrived - recording an impressive 25 clean sheets in 64 appearances in all competitions.
Reports had linked the 93-time capped Socceroo with a return to England, but the former Valencia and Arsenal gloveman has decided on testing himself with the Lupi.
Ryan, alongside Mathew Leckie, is the only Socceroo to have accumulated 10 appearances at the FIFA World Cup™, having played every available match at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 iterations of the tournament.
Roma will be the goalkeeper's ninth European club since leaving the Central Coast Mariners in 2013 which has seen him ply his trade in Belgium, Spain, England, Denmark, the Netherlands and now Italy.
Ryan, who will wear the number 98 jersey, was thrilled to call the Eternal City his new home and was excited for the challenge ahead.
"My first sensations of being here is obviously a lot of excitement," he told AS Roma's official YouTube channel.
"I want to obviously thank the club and the ownership for giving me the opportunity to be here, I've really felt the support of the fans and can't wait to experience it more and more.
"It's my first time playing in Italy, and Italian football as I know it's obviously quite tactical, it's of a great standard, there's always the best teams competing and winning the greatest European trophies.
"I'm really looking forward to bringing my experiences here to Roma and helping the team try and achieve its goals this season."
Roma open its Serie A 2024/25 campaign away to Cagliari on Monday, 19 August at 4:45am AEST.
