This match will form part of a two match series which will see the young Aussies lock horns with the Sky Blues before taking on A-League newcomers Macarthur FC next Tuesday night.

The U-23’s last fixture marked a massive day for Australian football as they sealed qualification for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games by defeating Uzbekistan’s U-23’s 1-0 in the third placed playoff of the AFC U-23 Championship.

This upcoming match will act as perfect preparation for Arnold’s men as they resume their preparations for Tokyo.

11 players from the squad that featured in the Championship in Thailand will be a part of the matches over the course of the next week in a group that consists entirely of domestic based players.

They will have a tough proposition on the horizon with Sydney high on confidence following their Grand Final victory against Melbourne City at the end of August.

What they said

Olyroos Head Coach Graham Arnold

“After a year of little national team activity, the players arrived yesterday eager to be back in camp and to resume the journey to Tokyo.

“Australia’s history in the men’s football competition at the Olympic Games dates back to Melbourne 1956, and this generation of players helped to secure Australia’s men’s team a return to the Olympic Games for the first time since Beijing 2008.

“This group of players – and the many more we are monitoring in Australia and overseas – have the opportunity to be part of a special period in Olyroos history as we work towards Tokyo. The next nine days and the forthcoming A-League season represents a fresh start and a great opportunity for all players to push their case for Olyroos selection in Tokyo.”
