Former Socceroos captain Mark Milligan has joined new Hyundai A-League club Macarthur FC on a two year marquee contract.
Former Socceroos captain Mark Milligan has been signed by Macarthur FC.
The move sees the experienced Milligan link up with former Socceroos assistant coach and current Macarthur head coach Ante Milicic.
“To come back home and be part of a brand-new club in the A-League is something I never thought I’d be able to do,” said Milligan.
The opportunity Ante has offered me to join Macarthur FC was something I couldn’t pass up."
“I’m looking forward to hitting the pitch and putting in the hard work, ready for our first match at Campbelltown.”
Milligan called time on his international career in December 2019 after 13 years and 80 caps with the Socceroos.
A longtime lynchpin, Milligan represented Australia at four FIFA World Cups, three AFC Asian Cups, the Confederation Cup, and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The 34-year-old will play in the Hyundai A-League for the first time since 2018 after he departed Melbourne Victory for stints at Saudi club Al-Ahli, before going on to feature for Scotland's Hibernian and most recently Southend.
In his previous Hyundai A-League stints, Milligan claimed two championships, securing the trophy with Sydney FC in 2006 and Victory in 2015.
Milicic spoke of the calibre of the footballer he has added to his inaugural squad.
“Mark brings a wealth of experience to our club and will be invaluable to the younger members of our squad. Working with him in the Socceroos across two world cups, I was always impressed by his leadership on and off the pitch.
“A Joe Marston Medal winner in 2015, Mark is no stranger to the A-League and will provide us with great structure in our defensive backline.” Milicic added.
Milligan will be joined at Macarthur by Socceroos Tommy Oar and Adam Federici as well as Olyroo Denis Genreau.
