Joeys squad selected for final training camp in Melbourne

Joeys Head Coach Trevor Morgan has named a 26-player squad for a training camp in Melbourne next week (13-19 August) as they prepare for the upcoming AFC U16 Championship in Malaysia which will be held later this year.

Morgan is looking forward to working with the players again after a successful training camp which was held at Narrabeen recently.

“With this camp we are looking to build upon the foundations that we established during our last camp in Sydney,” said Morgan.

“Over the six days we will be looking to challenge the players to take them to the next level both individually and as a team.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Melbourne City FC and Melbourne Victory for providing their respective youth teams as opposition for training matches.

“This camp will serve as an important phase of preparations for our AFC U-16 Championship campaign and it is vital that all players have a clear understanding in regards to the style of football we want to play in Malaysia,” concluded Morgan.

Australia qualified for the 2018 AFC U16 Championship in Malaysia after topping Group I of the qualification process in Mongolia last September. The Joeys finished ahead of Vietnam, Cambodia and Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar.

In April the Joeys were drawn in a challenging Group D for the 2018 AFC U16 Championship. Australia will need to finish first or second in a group containing defending champions Iraq, Korea Republic, and Afghanistan, to advance to the knockout phase of the competition. To qualify as one of Asia’s representatives for the 2019 FIFA U17 World Cup in Peru (October 2019) Australia must reach the Semi-Final stage of the tournament.
