Joeys continue strong start to AFC U-16 Championship qualifying

The Joeys have taken a strong step toward qualifying for the 2020 AFC U-16 Championship after a convincing 3-0 win over Macau on Wednesday night (AEST).

Australia scored all three goals in the first half of the game, with two goals from Nathan Nguyen bookending an own goal from Macau captain Leong Chon Kit.

The Joey’s second victory comes off the back of a 2-1 win over Mongolia on Monday, which has Australia on six points (with a goal difference of +4) in Group H, three points clear of both Timor-Leste and Mongolia with two games to play.

Vietnam are joint top of the group on the same points as the Joeys, but with a goal difference of +9 after defeating Mongolia 7-0 on Wednesday.

The Joeys come into the final two games with the task of overtaking Vietnam in the standings as the 11 group winners gain automatic qualification to the 2020 tournament, while the four best runners-up and host nation Bahrain secure the remaining five places.

Australia face Timor-Leste on Friday night (7pm AEST) in the penultimate game of their AFC U-16 Championship qualifying campaign, before they take on group leaders Vietnam on Sunday in a game which could determine who comes out on top of Group H.
