Irvine scores dramatic equaliser, Duke scores and assists, Mooy makes Celtic pre-season debut

Jackson Irvine continued his 2. Bundesliga goalscoring form with a superb header to salvage a point against Hannover while Mitch Duke registered a goal and an assist in Japan and Aaron Mooy debuted for Celtic. 

Irvine popped up deep into injury time to rescue a point for St. Pauli to secure a 2-2 draw and register back-to-back goals in 2. Bundesliga. 

Duke also scored and assisted in Fagiano Okayama’s 3-2 win over Albirex Niigata while Mooy pulled on the green and white hoops of Celtic for the first time.

Europe

Starting in Germany, where Jackson Irvine has continued his goalscoring form by netting a stoppage-time header for St. Pauli to salvage a point in a 2-2 draw with Hannover in 2. Bundesliga on Sunday. 

The Socceroos midfielder reacted quickest to head home in the fifth minute of additional time to keep Pauli unbeaten for the new season. The goal makes it two in two for the 29-year-old, who also scored the opening goal for St. Pauli last week against FC Nurnberg. 

Connor Metcalfe also made his 2. Bundesliga debut after coming off the bench in the 81st minute. 

Elsewhere in Germany, Ajdin Hrustic’s Eintracht Frankfurt had their last friendly against Ajax called off. Eintracht held a training session instead as they prepare for a final hit out against Astoria Walldorf on Wednesday. 

In Belgium, Jason Davidson made his first appearance in the Belgian Pro League after coming on in the 87th minute as K.A.S Eupen lost 3-1 to Sporting Charleroi in their opening game on Sunday. 

In Spain, Awer Mabil started in Cadiz CF’s 2-0 win over Malaga as pre-season continued on Saturday. 

Denis Genreau also played 15 minutes as Toulouse FC closed out their pre-season with a 5-4 win over Montpellier on Sunday. 

In Italy, Fran Karacic also featured as Brescia Calcio lost 2-0 to Sampdoria in a pre-season friendly on Sunday. 

In Olyroos abroad news, Alou Kuol was in action for VfB Stuttgart after coming off the bench in the 60th minute in their 5-2 over Valencia on Saturday. 

In Austria, Tristan Hammond was an unused substitute as Austria Wien II drew 2-2 with FC Liefering in Round 1 of the 2. Liga on Saturday.

Asia

In the J2 League, Mitch Duke scored a goal and registered an assist in Fagiano Okayama’s 3-2 win over Albirex Niigata on Saturday as they returned to winning ways following two consecutive draws. 


Duke assisted Fagiano’s first goal with a lay-off on the edge of the box before banging in the second goal with a neat header on the edge of the six-yard box. The goal is the Socceroos' fourth of the current J2. League season. 

United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, where Aaron Mooy made his pre-season Celtic debut after coming on in the 77th minute as the Hoops closed out their pre-season with a 2-0 victory over Norwich City in Glasgow on Saturday. 

Elsewhere in Scotland, Nathaniel Atkinson and Kye Rowles both started and played the full 90 for Heart of Midlothian as they defeated Stoke City 2-1 in Gary Locke's Testimonial match on Saturday.

In England, Riley McGree played the full 90 as Middlesbrough rounded off their pre-season campaign with a hearty 2-0 win over Marseille on Saturday. 

The 23-year-old almost scored in the 77th minute with a vigorous first-time volley but the keeper did well to push the goalbound strike to safety.

Elsewhere, Bailey Wright played the entire match and gave away a penalty as Sunderland went down 2-1 to Accrington Stanley on Saturday. 

In Olyroos Abroad news, Lachlan Brook was announced as a Crewe Alexandra player after sealing a loan move from Premier League Brentford until January.


Brook impressed the League Two outfit after trialling in a friendly against West Bromwich Albion last week. 

The 21-year-old joined Brentford’s B-Team set-up in 2020 and spent the second half of the last English season on loan at Adelaide.

In other Olyroos news, Nicholas Bilokapic and Jacob Chapman's both featured in Huddersfield’s 4-1 win over Tranmere Rovers in their penultimate pre-season friendly on Saturday. Bilokapic started while Chapman replaced him at half-time. 

The United States

Finishing with Major League Soccer, where Milos Degenek was an unused substitute as Columbus Crew played out a 0-0 draw with New England Revolution on Sunday.

The draw leaves Columbus in sixth position on the MLS Eastern Conference table as they try to lock down a final series play-off position.
