Danny Vukovic announces Genk departure

Danny Vukovic has confirmed that he will depart Belgian club KRC Genk with immediate effect.

The Australian goalkeeper is set to return home to re-unite with his pregnant wife Kristy and assess his options ahead of next season.

Vukovic's memorable time in Belgium since moving from Sydney FC in 2017 saw him make over 100 league appearances.

In his first season at the club, the shot-stopper was named player of the season and in 2019 he was part of the squad that won the Pro League title and Super Cup.

His achievements are all the more impressive considering how during that period he recovered from a serious Achilles tendon injury and overcame COVID-19.

“Thank you for all the messages. I appreciate them all, very difficult to reply but I’ll try my best to reply in the next few days," Vukovic shared via Instagram following the announcement.

“I am very busy trying to pack up my house before I leave.

I had the time of my life here in Genk and it was a dream come true in so many ways. I’ll be back one day. Take care.”

Vukovic made his Socceroos debut against Colombia in March 2018 - on the day of his 33rd birthday.

He has earned three international caps to date and was a member of Australia's 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup squads.
