Cummings 'buzzing' after goal on Australia debut

In typical charismatic fashion, Jason Cummings gave a post-match interview for the ages following his Subway Socceroos debut at Eden Park on Sunday.

Born in Scotland, the 27-year-old was called up for the pair of September friendlies against New Zealand in Brisbane and Auckland.

Cummings did not feature at Suncorp Stadium last Thursday but made his highly anticipated debut in the 63rd minute for his adopted country, marking his maiden appearance with a goal.

“Absolutely, I was buzzing you know,” Cummings told Network 10 post game as an inspired second-half outing produced a 2-0 victory.

“I was just chomping at the bit to try and get on over the camp. It's been a good camp, the boys have been different class and I was just wanting to get onto the pitch and so got a good 30 minutes.

“And you know the ball fell to me, and I caught it well and it was going and the boy handballed it, and so I was fuming.

“He gave the penalty and thought I better step up and finish off my dinner so was buzzing.”

The Central Coast Mariners striker thanked his teammates for allowing him to take the spot-kick after his goal-bound attempt was blocked by the arm of defender Liberato Cacace following a goal-mouth scramble.

The referee had no choice but to award a penalty and Cummings duly obliged, dispatching confidently from 12 yards out to double the visitors’ advantage.

“Fair play to the lads and Riley (McGree), they asked me if I wanted to take it and I said of course,” he said.

“It’s a striker’s dream, it’s my dream to step up and take a penalty, put it in the back of the net, not a problem.”

Cummings was one of six Australians who made their senior international debuts and admitted it would be a “dream” to make the final 26-man FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 squad.

“Of course it’s everyone’s dream, it’s my dream,” he explained.

“And all I need to do now is go back with the Mariners and work hard there and do well and score goals and you never know.”
