Awer Mabil signs deal with most successful Swiss club

Subway Socceroo winger Awer Mabil has signed a two-year contract to join Swiss Super League outfit Grasshopper Club Zürich.

The 27-year-old completed a transfer from LaLiga side Cadiz in search of more playing time and arrives at the most successful team in Switzerland.

As part of the deal, Mabil also has an option to extend his contract by a further season should both parties agree.

Grasshopper are the most successful club in Switzerland, winning 27 league titles, however their most recent championship occurred in 2002/03.

Mabil, who has 32 caps and nine goals for Australia, had most recent spent the last six months on loan at Sparta Prague and won the Czech First League.

This will be the forward's seventh club in Europe following his departure from Adelaide United in 2015, which has seen him ply his trade in Denmark, Portugal, Türkiye, Spain, Czechia and now Switzerland.

After putting pen-to-paper, the 2023 Young Australian of the Year recipient said in a club statement: "I am very excited to join GC Zurich.

"I can’t wait to play with the team and hopefully celebrate victories with our fans.”

Sports Director Bernt Haas added: “Awer brings us substantial experience gained both in Europe and on the international stage.

"He will complement the squad with a level of expertise, also with his speed and dribbling skills, all of which will be beneficial to the team."
