Aussies Abroad Wrap: McGree and Irvine score, Strain assists

Riley McGree found himself on the scoresheet again as Middlesbrough continued their impressive run in the Championship, Jackson Irvine scored his fourth goal of the season and Ryan Strain notched another assist in Scotland.

United Kingdom

Starting in England, where Harry Souttar started and played another 90 minutes in the Premier League as Leicester City traveled to Old Trafford and suffered a 3-0 defeat against Manchester United on Monday.

In the Championship, Riley McGree played another full game and scored his sixth goal of the season in a 3-1 win over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday to ensure a fifth straight win for Michael Carrick’s men. 


McGree also won his side a penalty in the 77th minute after he was hacked down but Boro were unable to convert the spot kick. 

The victory reduced Sheffield United's advantage in the second promotion spot to just four points.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Bailey Wright came off the bench in the 77th minute as Rotherham lost 2-0 against Coventry. Rotherham are two points above the relegation zone.  

Kenny Dougall started and played another 90 minutes as Blackpool beat Swansea 1-0 on Thursday. It was the Tangerines’ first win under Mick McCarthy and it moved them off the bottom of the table.


Callum Elder was an unused substitute as Hull City drew 0-0 with Preston on Sunday.

In League One, Massimo Luongo came off the bench in the 59th minute as Ipswich Town FC beat Forest Green 4-0 on Sunday. 

In Scotland, Ryan Strain played another 90 minutes and assisted the winning goal as St Mirren beat Ross County 1-0 on Sunday. 

Strain delivered the cross from which Declan Gallagher headed home in the eighth minute to lift St Mirren into fifth in the Scottish Premiership. 

Ryan Strain has been directly involved in a goal in four of his last five appearances for St Mirren and no player has made more tackles in the 2022/23 Scottish Premiership season (63).

Elsewhere in Scotland, Cameron Devlin started and played 45 minutes while Nathaniel Atkinson and Garang Kuol came on in the 60th minute as Heart of Midlothian lost 2-0 to Motherwell on Sunday. Kye Rowles was an unused substitute. 

James Jeggo also started and played 83 minutes in Hiberninan's 2-1 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday. 

Aziz Behich started and completed another 90 minutes for Dundee United in a 2-1 loss to St Johnstone on Sunday. United have lost their last four games and are rock bottom of the Scottish Premiership. 

In the Scottish Championship, Dylan McGowan also played 90 minutes and helped Hamilton Academical keep a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC on Sunday.

Europe

In Germany, Connor Metcalfe and Jackson Irvine both played 90 minutes as St Pauli beat FC Magdeburg 2-1 on Saturday. 

While Metcalfe has been in goalscoring form of late, this time it was Irvine who found himself on the scoresheet. Irvine headed home from a corner to score his fourth goal of the campaign. 

In the Netherlands, Maty Ryan was in goal again as AZ Alkmaar suffered a heartbreaking last-minute 2-1 loss against Feyenoord on Sunday in a top-of-the-table clash.

Alkmaar remain second in the Eredivisie, five points behind Feyenoord. 

Awer Mabil started his first match for AC Sparta Prague and came off at half-time in a 3-0 win over Jablonec on Monday in the Czech First League.


In France's Ligue 1, Denis Genreau came off the bench in the 84th minute as Toulouse FC lost 3-2 to Marseille on Monday.

In Serie B, Fran Karacic started and played 82 minutes as Brescia Calcio lost their sixth match in a row with a 1-0 defeat to Benevento on Sunday. Brescia currently sit in 19th position and are in serious danger of relegation. 

Jason Davidson played another 90 minutes as KAS Eupen lost 2-0 against Antwerp in the Belgian Pro League on Sunday. Eupen are three points above the relegation zone. 

Asia & The Middle East

In the J1 League, Thomas Deng came off the bench in the 86th minute as Albirex Niigata opened the season with a 2-2 draw against Cerezo Osaka on Saturday. 


Mitch Langerak played in goal and kicked off the J1 League campaign with a 1-0 win for Nagoya Grampus over Yokohama FC on Saturday. 

The J2 League kicked off as Mitch Duke made his competitive debut for Machida Zelvia with 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw against Vegalta Sendai on Sunday.

Duke transferred to Machida from Fagiano Okayama prior to the FIFA World Cup after two seasons where he scored 11 goals in 49 appearances.

Machida Zelvia are based in Tokyo and finished the 2022 season in 15th position on the J2 table.

In the Israeli Premier League, Nikita Rukavytsya came off the bench in the 75th minute as Maccabi Haifa lost 3-1 to Ashdod on Sunday.

United Kingdom

In the English Championship, goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic played 90 minutes and became the first goalkeeper to make an assist in the EFL Championship in 2023, with a long ball in Huddersfield's important 2-1 win over Birmingham on Sunday.

It was Huddersfield's first victory since December 29th which moves them up one place in the table to 22nd and two points away from safety.

In League Two, Lachlan Brook came off the bench in the 63rd minute for Crewe Alexandra on Sunday as they drew 2-2 with Harrogate Town. Crewe are 17th in League Two. 

Europe

In the Netherlands, Dylan Ryan was an unused substitute in the Eerste Divisie as FC Den Bosch lost 3-1 against Jong AZ Alkmaar on Saturday. 

In Germany's 3. Liga, John Iredale came on in the 81st minute for SV Wehen Wiesbaden in a 2-1 loss to FC Erzgebirge Aue on Saturday.

  • In Italy's Serie A, Cristian Volpato was an unused substitute for AS Roma in a 1-0 win over Hellas Verona on Monday.
  • In Serie B, Alessandro Circati was an unused substitute as Parma lost 1-0 against Ascoli on Sunday.
  • In Greece, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos was an unused substitute as PAS Giannina drew 1-1 with Asteras Tripolis FC on Sunday in the Super League. 

United Kingdom

  • In the English Championship, Dean Bouzanis was an unused substitute as Reading lost 1-0 against Cardiff City on Saturday.
  • In League One, Cameron Burgess played 90 minutes and picked up an assist as Ipswich Town FC beat Forest Green 4-0 on Sunday.
  • Elsewhere in League One, goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer played again for Charlton Athletic in a 2-0 loss to Derby County on Sunday. 
  • In League Two, Tete Yengi came on in the 93rd minute as Northampton Town lost 2-1 to Grimsby Town on Sunday.
  • In Premier League 2, Alexander Robertson started and played 68 minutes as Manchester City U21 drew 2-2 with Fulham U21 on Saturday.
