Aussies Abroad Wrap: Mabil and Behich debut, Francois appears in Premier League

It was another bumper weekend of Aussies abroad action as Awer Mabil made his La Liga debut, Aziz Behich started in the Scottish Premiership for the first time and Francois made his first Premier League appearance of 2022.

Europe

Starting in Spain, where Awer Mabil made his La Liga debut as Cádiz CF kicked off their season win a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad on Monday. Mabil came off the bench at half time to try and overturn the one goal deficit but Cádiz could not find a way past a resolute Sociedad team. 

In Italy, Fran Karacic also kicked off the Serie B season with Brescia Calcio as they recorded a 2-0 win over F.C. Südtirol on Monday. Karacic started and played 90 minutes at right back as Brescia started the season in style. 

Elsewhere in Denmark, Joel King's Odense Boldklub suffered another defeat, this time going down 2-0 to Brøndby IF on Monday. King started the match at left back and played 77 minutes as Odense remain winless in the Danish Superliga. 

Following defeat in their last 2. Bundesliga outing against FC Kaiserslautern,  Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe's St. Pauli bounced back with a 3-0 win over FC Magdeburg on Sunday. Irvine started the match and played 90 minutes as St. Pauli's captain while Metcalfe came off the bench in the 81st minute to close out the victory. 

In France, Toulouse and Denis Genreau recorded their first Ligue 1 victory as they brushed aside ES Troyes AC 3-0 on Sunday. Genreau came on in the 76th minute to close out the win. 

In Belgium, Jason Davidson's K.A.S. Eupen lost 1-0 to league leaders Royal Antwerp F.C. on Monday. Davidson started the match at left back and played 90 minutes. 

United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, where Aaron Mooy's Celtic continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 5-0 win over Kilmarnock. Mooy came off the bench in the 66th minute to close out the dominant away performance. 

Elsewhere in Scotland, Aziz Behich made his Scottish Premiership debut as Dundee United went down 4-1 to Nathaniel Atkinson and Kye Rowles' Heart of Midlothian on Monday. Behich started the match and played 90 minutes at left back while Rowles started and played 90 minutes at centre back and Atkinson was an unused substitute. 

Still on a high from his dream re-introduction to Scottish football, Martin Boyle could not inspire his Hibernian side to a victory over Livingston. Boyle came off the bench at half time to try and rescue a victory but it was not enough as Hibs went down 2-1 on Saturday. Olyroo Lewis Miller was an unused substitute. 

In England, Riley McGree and Middlesbrough played out a 2-2 draw with Sheffield United on Sunday. McGree started and played 90 minutes in Boros midfield. 


Elsewhere in the Championship, Kenny Dougall also started and played 90 minutes as Blackpool lost 1-0 to Swansea City on Saturday. 

It was Dougall's second start in four days after the Socceroos midfielder played 63 minutes against Barrow AFC in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. 

Bailey Wright also featured for Sunderland after coming off the bench in the 88th minute to close out a 2-2 draw with Queens Park Rangers on Saturday. 

In Olyroos Abroad news, Tyrese Francois made his first Premier League appearance of the season after coming on in the 92nd minute to close out Fulham's 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. 

In the Championship, goalkeeper Jacob Chapman featured on the bench in Huddersfield's 3-1 win over Stoke City on Sunday.

In League Two, Lachlan Brook started and played the first half as Crewe Alexandra FC suffered their first loss of the season by going down 3-0 to Salford City on Saturday. 

Asia

In the J2. League Mitch Duke started and played 61 minutes as Fagiano Okayama won 3-2 against Renofa Yamaguchi FC on Saturday while Adam Taggart's Cerezo Osaka had their J1 League match postponed due to the approach of Tropical Storm Meari.

Fagiano are now undefeated in their last seven matches and the win takes them into fourth as they look to secure promotion to Japan's top division. 

The United States

Finishing with Major League Soccer, where Socceroos defender Miloš Degenek notched up another 90 minutes as his Columbus Crew side played out a 1-1 draw with Colorado Rapids. The result leaves Columbus in fifth position as they try to hold their finals series play-off place with 10 games remaining in the MLS Eastern Conference.
