Aussies Abroad Wrap: Kuol debuts in Scotland, Mooy books Cup Final spot

It was another big weekend of Aussies Abroad action as Garang Kuol made his Heart of Midlothian debut while Aaron Mooy helped Celtic to a Scottish League Cup final.

United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, where Garang Kuol made his Heart of Midlothian in a 1-0 win over St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

The 18-year-old came off the bench in the 77th minute of the home victory at Tynecastle Stadium. Kuol excited fans when he set up Stephen Humphrys for what should have been a second goal in the 89th minute. However, Humphrys shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.


Kuol was one of three Australians to appear for Hearts, along with defender Kye Rowles and fellow sub Cameron Devlin, while Nathaniel Atkinson was an unused substitute. 

Rowles started and played another 90 minutes while Devlin came off the bench in the 60th minute. Keanu Baccus also started and played 67 minutes.

The win put Hearts six points clear of Aberdeen in third place behind Aaron Mooy's Celtic and Rangers.

Mooy started and came off in the 93rd minute as Celtic booked a spot in the Scottish League Cup final with a 2-0 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday.  

Daizen Maeda chested in Mooy’s 18th-minute free-kick to open the scoring for the holders at Hampden Park before Giorgos Giakoumakis sealed the victory in stoppage time. 

Celtic will face Rangers in the final in February.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Aziz Behich started and played another 90 minutes for Dundee United in a 2-2 draw with Hibernian on Sunday. Ryan McGowan also started and played 50 minutes as St Johnstone lost 4-2 against Livingston on Sunday.

In England, Harry Souttar played another 90 minutes as Stoke City lost 3-1 against Sheffield United in the Championship on Sunday.  Souttar was recently named Stoke's Player of the Month for December. 

Riley McGree started and was substituted in the 94th minute as Middlesbrough beat Millwall 1-0 on Sunday. The win extends Boro's unbeaten run to four matches and lifts them into fourth in the Championship. 

Bailey Wright was an unused substitute as Sunderland lost 3-1 to Swansea City on Sunday while Tom Rogic was also an unused substitute in West Brom's 3-2 win over Luton Town on Sunday.

Kenny Dougall was also an unused substitute in Blackpool's 2-0 loss to Watford on Sunday.

Europe

In Italy's Serie B, Fran Karacic started and played 68 minutes as Brescia Calcio returned to action a 1-0 loss against Südtirol on Monday.

In the Belgian Pro League, Jason Davidson started, played 82 minutes and scored an own goal in KAS Eupen's 2-0 loss to STVV on Sunday. 

In Ligue 2, Alex Gersbach started and played 90 minutes as Grenoble Foot 38 beat Guingamp 4-2 on Saturday.

Olyroos and Subway Young Socceroos

United Kingdom

It was a weekend to remember for Olyroos goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic, who made his Championship debut for Huddersfield Town. The shot-stopper started between the sticks away to Hull City, as the Terriers were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw after conceding a 98th-minute equaliser.

Fellow Aussie goalkeeper Jacob Chapman featured on the bench after returning to the club following the conclusion of his loan spell at Salford City. 

In League Two, Lachlan Brook started and played 66 minutes as Crewe Alexandra drew 1-1 with Mansfield Town on Sunday.

In Premier League 2, Cameron Peupion started and played 90 minutes as Brighton & Hove Albion U21 lost 2-1 against Manchester City U21 on Sunday.

Europe

In Germany's 3. Liga, John Iredale came off the bench in the 92nd minute as SV Wehen Wiesbaden beat SV Elversberg 1-0 on Sunday.
