Aussies Abroad: Mabil’s goal not enough as Amini’s AGF pull off an upset

Mustafa Amini has won the battle of the Caltex Socceroos as his AGF shocked league-leaders and Awer Mabil’s FC Midtjylland 3-1 in the Danish Super League overnight.

Midtjylland looked on course for another win when Mabil opened the scoring for the hosts on 35 minutes, his fifth goal of the campaign.

But AGF – with Aussies Amini and Zach Duncan in their starting line-up – came roaring back to record a famous win.

AGF scored three goals in the space of eight second-half minutes, via an Erik Sviatchenko own goal and further strikes from Jon Thorsteinsson and Bror Blume.

Amini and Duncan both played 90 minutes for the visitors, who have now stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions.

The defeat for Mabil’s Midtjylland has opened the door for champions FC Copenhagen to cut the deficit at the top of the ladder.

Copenhagen are currently seven points behind Mabil’s side, but play their game in hand on Tuesday morning (AEDT) against ninth-place OB.

The Danish Super League will now pause for their winter break, with the competition to resume in February next year.
