Aussies Abroad: Mabil starts for Midtjylland at Anfield, Wright opens Sunderland account

Awer Mabil featured in the starting line-up for his side’s UEFA Champions League fixture against Liverpool at Anfield while Bailey Wright scored his first goal for Sunderland.

Mabil started and played 66 minutes for Midtjylland as they were outdone 2-0 at the home of the English champions on Wednesday morning.

Mabil’s side managed to keep Liverpool at bay for the first half before the Reds broke the deadlock via Diogo Jota ten minutes into the second half.

A Mohamed Salah penalty in the third minute of stoppage time condemned the Danish title holders to their second straight defeat in the competition.

The Aussie centre back headed home Lynden Gooch’s deflected cross into the box on 40 minutes to give his side a 2-1 lead.

However, the Black Cats’ advantage lasted all but four minutes as the hosts struck back to ensure that they shared the spoils.

In the English Championship, Harry Souttar put in another full shift for Stoke City as they went down 2-0 to Swansea City.

That was just the Potters’ second defeat of the league season with their last loss arriving over a month ago at the hands of Bristol City.

Heading to the Netherlands where Daniel Arzani came on for the second half for FC Utrecht’s 4-2 victory against FC Dordrecht in the KNVB Cup.

He will be hoping that his performance will be enough to place him in contention for a first league start come Sunday.

In the Saudi King’s Cup, Craig Goodwin started and featured for 86 minutes as his Abha Club fell to a 2-0 defeat in their semi-final encounter against Al Hilal.

The loss brings an end to the club’s extended cup run which began prior to the COVID-19 enforced break in December last year.
