Fresh off an historic third-placed finish last season, Hibernian started off their 2021-22 campaign with three points as Boyle's 70th minute penalty sealed victory at Motherwell.

Two goals conceded off set pieces saw Jack Ross' men trail twice, before the Socceroos attacker held his nerve from the spot to turn the table and ensure the match finished 3-2 to the away side.

"It's fantastic, we showed great character," Boyle told Sky Sports post-game.

"It was difficult going down but the boys showed up and we dug in and got three points."

Boyle's attention now turns to a third-round UEFA Conference League qualifier at Easter Road on Thursday, when his side host HNK Rijeka of Croatia.

Remaining in Scotland, Tom Rogic was introduced as a late substitute as Celtic started off their season in disappointing fashion.

It was the relative of a Socceroo who proved the difference for newly-promoted Hearts, with John Souttar - brother of Harry - nodding home a late winner to sink Ange Postecoglou's side.

Awer Mabil, another recent goalscorer against Celtic, backed up his Champions League heroics with a 62-minute shift as FC Midtjylland defeated Viborg 2-0.

Mabil's club sit in second of the Danish Superliga after three rounds.

Over in Belgium, Trent Sainsbury was an unused substitute for FC Kortrijk as the club defeated Royal Antwerp 1-0.

The result saw Sainsbury's club go top of the Belgian Pro League, as the only team to register two wins from two this season.
