Aussies Abroad: Behich’s Bursaspor crash out of Turkish Cup

Caltex Socceroos defender Aziz Behich’s Bursaspor have crashed out of the Turkish Cup on Wednesday morning (AEDT), but there was a winning return to action for another Aussie in Belguim.

In their first game back after a winter break in Turkey, Behich’s Bursaspor hosted Genclerbirligi in the second leg of their Turkish Cup last 16 tie.

Having lost the first leg 1-0 away, Bursaspor needed a two-goal win in front of their home fans but fell behind inside 20 minutes at the Bursa Buyuksehir Belediye Stadium.

Bursaspor levelled before the break through Mikel Agu and when Yusuf Erdogan put them in front early in the second half, there was hope they could progress.

But they were unable to find another goal meaning Bursaspor exit the Cup on the away goals rule.

Behich played another 90 minutes, picking up a yellow card midway through the first half.

While there was disappointment for the left-back, Caltex Socceroos keeper Danny Vukovic enjoyed a win in a crazy clash in Belgium.

In a rescheduled match against Oostende that was postponed last month due to wild weather, Marcus Ingvartsen’s 33rd minute goal looked like it was going to be enough to settle the contest for Genk.

But in a thrilling ending, Oostende equalised via an own goal in the final minute, only for Vukovic’s side to steal the win in the third minute of stoppage-time thanks to Thomas Buffel’s strike.

The last-gasp win has seen Genk jump four places up to seventh spot ahead of the weekend’s clash with high-flyers Anderlecht.

Elsewhere, Kenneth Dougall played a full match while Craig Goodwin was a late substitute for Sparta Rotterdam, as they lost 1-0 at home against Vitesse in the Dutch Eredivisie.

The defeat keeps Sparta at the foot of the Eredivisie ladder ahead of the weekend’s meeting with Excelsior.
