Aussies Abroad: Behich wins silverware in Turkey, AGF Aussies break 23 year drought

Aziz Behich etched his name into Turkish football history after his Istanbul Basaksehir secured their inaugural Super Lig title on Monday morning while Mustafa Amini, Alex Gersbach and Zach Duncan were also in celebration mode after their AGF Aarhus tied up a top three finish in the Danish top flight for the first time in 23 years.

Aziz Behich achieved a massive milestone in Turkey after his Istanbul Basaksehir sealed the Super Lig championship overnight thanks to their 1-0 win over Kayserispor.

Behich and his teammates will go down as club legends after they secured their first ever top flight title.

In the Danish Superligaen, Mustafa Amini, Alex Gersbach and Zach Duncan’s AGF Aarhus had cause for celebration after their 4-2 victory against FC Kobenhavn meant they secured a top three finish for the first time in 23 years.

They will now have the chance to feature in next season’s Europa League if they manage to navigate their way through the playoffs.

Awer Mabil’s Midtjylland enjoyed a 6-3 triumph against Nordsjaelland on Saturday morning.

Nordsjaelland played most of the match a man down after one of their players was given his marching orders just after 10 minutes.

Mabil entered the action in the 73rd minute with his side 4-3 up, however that did not stop him from getting in on the act as he teed up fellow striker Lasse Vibe for his side’s sixth goal in the first minute of stoppage time.

Over to the K League and Brandon O’Neill put in a full shift for Pohang Steelers as they cruised past FC Seoul with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night.

The Steelers latest win extends their unbeaten league run to six matches as they remain the competition’s form side.

Adam Taggart and Terry Antonis’ Suwon Bluewings fell to a 1-0 defeat against Seongnam FC on Sunday night.

Taggart played the full game upfront for the Bluewings while Antonis was an unused substitute.

In the J League, Mitch Langerak put in a man of the match performance between the sticks for Nagoya Grampus as they recorded a 1-0 win at home to Sagan Tosu on Saturday night.

That is now back-to-back clean sheets for the Aussie shot stopper as his side rise to 4th on the league ladder and are one of only two sides who remain undefeated this campaign.

Thomas Deng was absent for Urawa Red Diamonds as they suffered a 2-0 defeat away to FC Tokyo on Saturday night.

In the English Championship, Massimo Luongo played just over 70 minutes for Sheffield Wednesday as they fell to a 5-3 defeat against Fulham in a blockbuster encounter on Sunday morning.

A second half revival saw Luongo’s side come close to snatching a point from the contest after they trailed 3-0 at the break.

Brad Smith was an unused substitute for Cardiff City as they ran out 3-1 winners at Middlesbrough on Sunday morning.

The Bluebirds are now odds on favourites to secure the last playoff berth on offer.
