The Saudis and Aussies are jostling for second spot, the all-important other automatic qualification spot.
Australia currently have 19 points from their 10 games, the Saudis have 16 points from nine games.
The regulations state the rankings of teams is based on the following criteria in this order.
1. Points
2. Goal difference
3. Goals scored
4. Points in matches between tied teams
5. Goal difference in matches between tied teams
6. Goals scored in matches between tied teams
7. Away goals in matches between tied teams
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
If Saudi Arabia defeat Japan, the Saudis will qualify automatically as they’ll have a better goal difference.
If Saudi Arabia draw or lose to Japan, Australia will qualify for Russia 2018.
