Olyroos target top spot ahead of showdown

The Olyroos go into Tuesday's final AFC U-23 Championship qualifier with one goal: to defeat the undefeated Myanmar, finish top of the group and make it to the final round of Rio 2016 qualifiers in Qatar next year.

The Australians defeated Chinese Taipei 4-0 on Sunday night in the second of three qualifiers for the AFC U-23 Championships in Qatar next January (which will double as Rio Olympics qualifiers).

Olyroos register second straight win

The Olyroos scored twice in each half to run out comfortable 4-0 winners over the group F hosts at the National Stadium in Kaohsiung.

This followed on from their 6-0 demolition of Hong Kong on Friday night at the same venue.

Olyroos hit Hong Kong for six

The result means the Olyroos are now level on six points at the top of the group with Myanmar - although with a far superior goal difference – ahead of their clash on Tuesday night.

While they only need a draw to top the group and progress to next year’s AFC Under-23 Championships in Qatar, Vidmar insists his side will go all out for victory.

“It’s a very important game for both teams, both teams have to win,” the Olyroos boss said.

“It will be a very good game. For us we’re going out with the same mentality to win the game. I said at the beginning we came here to win the tournament, to top our group and that’s what we intend to do.”

Former Newcastle Jets pair Josh Brillante and Adam Taggart bagged goals in the first half before Wanderers winger Jaushua Sotirio and Liverpool’s Brad Smith completed the rout after the break against the tournament hosts.

“I’m satisfied because we won and took the three points but it was a game for us in two halves,” Vidmar said.

“The first half was not the football we want to play and there were reasons for that but the second half was a lot better and a lot closer to the football we wanted to play and we scored some good goals.

"Chinese Taipei were always a very dangerous team, especially when we were going forward, on the counter attack they are very quick and had a few opportunities but that happens a lot in games anyway.

“But I’m very pleased with the result and the reaction of the players in the second half.”
