Ikonomidis leads Lazio to Cup glory

Recently capped Socceroo Chris Ikonomidis has led Lazio's youth team to the Coppa Primavera, scoring both the goals in his side's 2-0 win over Roma.

The 19-year-old netted twice in the first-half to help his side overcome a one goal deficit from the first leg, taking the title for the second year in a row with a 2-1 triumph on aggregate.

It took just seven minutes for Ikonomidis, who was on the bench for the first team mid-week, to stamp his authority on the final with a clinical left-footed strike to level the tie.

The rising star completed his brace just before the break when he was set up by teammate Mamadou Tounkara and made no mistake with the finish.

Lazio never surrendered their advantage as they hung on in the second-half to claim the 43rd edition of the Cup.

The result caps a world-wind couple of months for the teenager having made his international debut for the Socceroos off the bench in the draw with FYR Macedonia.

Ikonomidis will no doubt hope to play a bigger part on the Socceroos' road to the 2018 World Cup in Russia when they begin qualifiers against Jordan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Bangladesh in June.
