Flying Leckie’s message to Dutch

Livewire Socceroo winger Matt Leckie has a warning for the dazzling Dutch ahead of the two teams’ clash later this week in a do-or-die encounter for the Aussies in Porto Alegre.

The German-based Socceroo, who blitzed Chile in the opening game of the World Cup on Friday night in Cuiaba, says pace down the flanks and good crosses to the history making Timmy Cahill will trouble any opponent at this World Cup, not just the highly ranked Holland.

“If we can get into wide areas and get good crosses in, any team will struggle to stop us,” the 23-year-old former Adelaide United striker predicted.

“We will take on Holland with our game plan and look to play like we did for 70 minutes against Chile.

“I got into good areas where I could expose them one-on-one. It was a great performance from the team.

"If we could have played the whole 90 like we did for 70 it would have been a different story.”

A large media contingent was on hand to hear what the Australians had to say in Vitoria on Sunday ahead of Thursday morning’s clash (Australian time) at the Estadio Beira-Rio.

And if the pacy winger can produce again, the Australians have another opportunity to shine on the biggest stage of all against an Oranje side with their tails up after spanking Spain 5-1 in their group opener.

"I was given the opportunity to start against Chile and now I need to be consistent for the next two games."

"I thought myself and [Ivan] Franjic started to dominate the right hand side before he got injured in the second half.”

And he’s confident his stunning start to the World Cup can help propel the Socceroos to another eye-catching display.

“I feel that in a World Cup, anything can happen," said Leckie, who is set to link up with Bundesliga 2 side Inglostadt after Brazil but is attracting attention from bigger clubs right now.

The Australians should be ready to put on another high-energy show in Porto Alegre on Wednesday (early Thursday morning AEST).

A recovery session on Saturday and a day off on Sunday have clearly re-energised the squad after the disappointment of losing in Cuiaba 3-1 to the Chileans.

Following a disastrous start going down 2-0 in the opening 15 minutes, the Aussies’ fitness and spirit saw them power back into the game to almost snatch an equaliser but a goal in time added on finished off the game 3-1 to La Roja.

"It is important for us to have the day off training. It was a hard game and we need to regenerate our bodies."
