Crucial wins for Caltex Socceroos in the Championship

Caltex Socceroo midfielder Massimo Luongo helped Queens Park Rangers to a crucial win in England’s Championship, while there was also success for Aussie skipper Mile Jedinak's Aston Villa this morning.

Luongo’s QPR moved just a point outside the play-off places thanks to a 1-0 win over high-flying Bristol City and the Australian midfielder played a vital role in the winning goal.

It was his excellent cross which enable Idrissa Sylla to tuck it home to hand Rangers their fifth win of the campaign and move up to ninth spot.

It was also a good night for Jedinak and new boss Steve Bruce as they prevailed 2-1 at Reading.

In just Bruce’s second game in charge for the Villans, a last minute penalty converted by Jordan Ayew handed them maximum points for just the second time in 13 games this season.

Jedinak was excellent in the midfield, getting through a full game as Villa moved up to 17th and three points clear of the relegation zone.

But there was disappointment for Jackson Irvine and Burton Albion, who lost 2-0 at Ipswich Town.

Irvine picked up a yellow card midway through the first half before he was substituted late on for the 18th-placed Brewers.

Ryan Williams watched from the bench as his Barnsley side lost 2-0 against Rafa Benitez’s league-leaders Newcastle United.

And in League One, Cameron Burgess played a full game for lowly Oldham Athletic, who pulled off a huge shock by beating first-placed Scunthorpe 2-0.
