Transfer news: Aussie exits Blues, linked to A-League

Australian defender Shane Lowry has been linked with a move to the Hyundai A-League after leaving English Championship side Birmingham City.

The 26-year-old cancelled his contract with the club by mutual consent after just five months and two appearances with the Blues.

Lowry has found limited opportunities to break into City’s first-team, not making his club debut until last month.

And it appears the defender, who can play both centrally and on the left, could return to Australia with hometown club Perth Glory heavily linked.

It would be another huge coup for Glory to secure his services, having also signed Socceroos striker Adam Taggart on Wednesday (though he's not eligible to play till next season).

Lowry, who began his career abroad as a trainee at Aston Villa, has also played for Millwall, Leyton Orient, Leeds United and Plymouth Argyle in England.

He has been called into Socceroos squads in the past without making an appearance and was part of Pim Verbeek’s extended 2010 World Cup squad in South Africa before missing out on the final 23-man squad for the tournament.
