Aussies abroad: tough night for Caltex Socceroos

It was an unhappy night for a host of Caltex Socceroos around the globe with only a couple managing to register a win.

We start in the English Championship where Aaron Mooy put in another solid 90 minute shift but it didn’t help Huddersfield Town as they lost 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday.

Caltex Socceroo skipper Mile Jedinak was substituted in stoppage-time as Aston Villa lost 1-0 at Wolves, while Ryan Williams played 70 minutes in Barnsley’s 2-0 defeat at Fulham.

Defender Bailey Wright was involved in a five-goal thriller with his new side Bristol City who, despite leading twice, lost 3-2 at home to Cardiff City.

Injury kept Jackson Irvine out of Burton Albion’s clash with Wigan Athletic and it showed, as the Brewers went down 2-0 at home.

The defeat against one of Burton’s fellow relegation rivals pulls the club even closer to the drop zone.

In the Premier League, Adam Federici and Brad Smith watched from the bench as Bournemouth lost 3-1 at Hull City.

The Eredivisie in the Netherlands resumed after their winter break with Craig Goodwin the only Aussie seeing any action overnight.

The winger came on with five minutes left for Sparta Rotterdam as they conceded late to lose 2-1 against Utrecht, with Kenneth Dougall an unused substitute.

As was left-back Jason Davidson for Groningen, who registered an impressive 4-1 away win against Heracles.

Mark Milligan got through a full game for Bani Yas in the UAE as they drew 1-1 against Al Ain, with former Melbourne City star Harry Novillo scoring Bani Yas’ goal.

But there was disappointment for Nikolai Topor-Stanley as the defender scored an own goal in Hatta’s 3-2 loss against Al Wahda.

Meanwhile in League One in England, Cameron Burgess’ new side Bury cruised to an emphatic 5-1 win over Bradden Inman’s Peterborough.

Burgess played a full match for the hosts as James Vaughan scored four of their five goals, while Inman was an unused substitute.

It was 1-0 defeats all around for the other Aussies in League One with Chris Herd’s Gillingham going down at Oldham, James Meredith’s Bradford coming unstuck at Shrewsbury Town and Andy Rose’s Coventry losing at Chesterfield.
