Aussies Abroad: Juric scores, Leckie stars against Bayern

Mat Leckie starred against Bayern Munich, Aaron Mooy had the last laugh over a Caltex Socceroos team-mate and another goal for Tomi Juric in Switzerland.

UK

It was an all Aussie affair in the Championship as Massimo Luongo’s QPR made the trip to league-leaders Huddersfield Town, the home of Aaron Mooy.

And Mooy’s Terriers emerged with a hard-fought 2-1 win, with the Caltex Socceroo pair both getting though 90 minutes for their respective sides.

Mile Jedinak was back in the Aston Villa side but they were unable to find a breakthrough at Ipswich Town, the game ending goalless.

It was defeat for Jackson Irvine’s Burton Albion, who went down 1-0 at home to Brighton, with the in-from Socceroo midfielder playing a full match.

Defender Bailey Wright watched from the bench on a sorry day for Preston North End, who were thumped 5-0 at Brentford.

There was a rare goal for left-back James Meredith in League One as Bradford City drew 1-1 with Bristol Rovers.

Meredith found himself in the box 17 minutes from time, in the right spot to nod home a deflected cross from six yards out.

Alex Cisak played a full match in goal for Leyton Orient in League Two, but they lost 1-0 against Yeovil Town, while in the National League, Giancarlo Gallifuoco got through 90 in Torquay’s 2-0 loss at Boreham Wood.

North of the border, Scott McDonald played a full game in Motherwell’s 4-2 win over Hamilton Academical, while Ryan Edwards put in a strong shift as Partick Thistle drew 2-2 at Kilmarnock.

EUROPE

Mat Leckie caught the eye with a brilliant display against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

The Caltex Socceroos winger set up FC Ingolstadt’s goal with a brilliant through-ball  with the outside of his right foot at the visitors took a shock early lead.

But Munich’s class eventually shone through as they prevailed 3-1, but Leckie’s display impressed many good judges in Germany.

Keeper Mitch Langerak kept another clean sheet for Vfb Stuttgart as the moved up to fourth with a 1-0 win over Kaiserslautern.

Tomi Juric helped FC Luzern through to the last eight of the Swiss Cup, scoring the opening goal of their 3-0 win at FC Ticino.

Juric showed great strength to hold off his defender and head in at the far post from a corner 11 minutes from time to spark a late onslaught from the visitors.

Former Wanderer Golgol Mebrahtu also got on the scoresheet in the Czech Republic, rounding off a comfortable 3-0 win for his FK Mladá Boleslav.

There were starts for Aussie duo Mustafa Amini and Chris Ikonomidis in Denmark, but the pair were unable to inspire Aarhus GF to victory, going down 1-0 at Silkeborg IF.

Jimmy Jeggo played a full match as Sturm Graz stayed top in Austria with a 3-0 win at Admira, while Daniel De Silva played almost an hour for Roda JC who lost 3-0 at home to Heerenveen in the Eredivisie.

ASIA

In China, Trent Sainsbury helped Jiangsu Suning repel everything that Tianjin Teda threw at them as they won 2-0 to stay second in the CSL.

Sainsbury played a full match for Jiangsu, while Aleksandar Jovanovic also got through 90 for Tianjin.

Fellow defender Tomi Mrcela was also excellent for Jeonnam Dragons as they won 2-0 over Gwangju FC in the K-League.

Adrian Leijer also got through a full game as Suwon FC lost 2-1 at Seongnam, although Bruce Djite was not in the squad for the visitors.

Zac Anderson made his debut for Emirates Club in the UAE, playing a full game as they were crushed 4-0 at heavyweights Al Ahli.

And in Thailand, Mark Bridge also played 90 minutes for Chiangrai who drew 0-0 at Navy FC.
