Aaron Mooy’s Huddersfield Town enjoyed the perfect start to 2017 while two other Caltex Socceroos faced-off in England’s Championship on Tuesday morning (AEDT).
In another exceptional performance in the heart of Huddersfield’s midfield, Mooy got through another 90 minutes as Town beat Wigan 1-0.
Nahki Wells struck late to hand David Wagner’s men all three points to stay in fourth spot.
It was an all-Aussie affair at the Pirelli Stadium with Bailey Wright’s Preston North End escaping with a vital win against Jackson Irvine’s Burton Albion.
Both Caltex Socceroos played 90 minutes with Wright helping Preston keep Irvine quiet as the visitors won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Tom Clarke.
While Irvine and Burton remain perilously close to the relegation zone, Preston’s win means they are 11th and in striking distance of the playoff places.
Elsewhere in the Championship, Ryan Williams played 81 minutes for Barnsley, who scored an impressive 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.
Youngster Aidan O’Neill watched from the bench in the English Premier League as his Burnley side lost 2-1 against a 10-man Manchester City.
And in League One, left-back James Meredith played a full match as Bradford City came from a goal down to beat Northampton Town 2-1.
Defender Cameron Burgess was excellent as Oldham drew 0-0 with Port Vale, while Andy Rose put in another strong shift as Coventry had a 2-2 draw with Bolton.
But it was a horror night for gloveman Alex Cisak in League Two, with his Leyton Orient crashing to a 4-0 loss at Exeter City.
