Sainsbury came through the Central Coast system at the same time as national team-mate Ryan and also featured in the drought-breaking 2013 Grand Final triumph.
A move to PEC Zwolle of the Eredivisie soon followed but a highly unfortunate fractured kneecap on debut ended his season prematurely and dashed his hopes of a ticket to Brazil.
After swapping Europe for the Chinese Super League, he secured a surprise loan move to Inter Milan in January 2017 and Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven in 2018.
He spent a season in the Netherlands before joining fellow Socceroo Nikita Rukavytsya at Israeli outfit Maccabi Haifa.
The Perth born defender went on to make 34 appearances for Haifa over the course of the 2019/20 season before making the switch to Belgian side Kortrijk in August 2020.
Best Socceroos moment:
Alongside Matthew Spiranovic, Sainsbury was immense in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup campaign. He scored in the semi-final and was named in the Team of the Tournament.
The Western Australia native made 60 appearances in his four seasons with the Mariners.
