Scooped up by Celtic in 2012, Irvine spent time with Kilmarnock and Ross County where he developed a reputation as a versatile and energetic midfielder or centre-back.

His form in Scotland was noticed by Championship side Burton Albion, who successfully converted him into a box-to-box midfielder.

After finishing his debut season in England with 10 league goals and Burton's player of the year award, he was rewarded with a move to Hull City.

The midfielder spent three seasons at Hull and wore the captain’s armband on a handful of occasions in his final season at the club.

After 11 months without a club, Irvine returned to Scotland in January 2021, signing for Hibernian.

He immediately impressed with Hibs, establishing himself as a starter alongside his international teammate Martin Boyle.

Irvine carried his form onto the international stage, finishing with more goal contributions than any Socceroo during round two of qualifying.

Following the international window, he sealed a move to German outfit FC St. Pauli and after his strong performances signed a new long-term extension with the club in October 2022. Appearing at his second FIFA World Cup in 2022, Irvine started all four matches in Doha and was a key pillar in midfield as the Socceroos reached the Round of 16. As his stellar club form with St Pauli continued, Irvine carried that into the March 2023 camp for friendlies against Ecuador. He opened the scoring Ecuador in a 3-1 win in Sydney and became the 63rd Socceroo to captain his country four days later in Melbourne.

A-League connection:

Irvine spent two years in Melbourne Victory's youth set-up before being spotted by Celtic.
