World Cup countdown - 79 days to go

Today it’s all about the letter ‘M’.

Today it-s all about the letter ‘M-.

In the list of players to have been capped for the Socceroos, 79 have a surname that starts with the letter ‘M- - from Jim Mackay to Kevin Muscat and 77 other names in between.

Of the 79 ‘M-s on the list, there are three Mullens (two of which are father-son), three Murphys, two Murrays, a couple of Mitchells and Morgans plus two McDonalds.

The first ‘M- to play for the Socceroos was Bill Maunder who was part of the starting XI for Australia-s first ever international in June 1922 against New Zealand, while Michael Marrone and Aaron Mooy-s debut against Guam in December 2012 was the last time a player with a surname starting with ‘M- made their debut for the national team.

And while we-re on the topic of the letter M, from the last Socceroos squad that faced Ecuador in London, it also proved a popular letter amongst first names - Mile Jedinak, Mitch Langerak, Mathew Leckie, Massimo Luongo, Matt McKay, Mark Milligan, Matt Ryan and Matthew Spiranovic.
