Today we recognise a former Socceroo who made 61 appearances for his country.

Anthony “Tony” Popovic was born on July 4, 1973 in Sydney and went on to represent Australia 61 times.

The tall defender made his debut for the Green and Gold in 1995. He went on to score eight goals in his international career and was part of the Socceroos squad at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

Popovic announced his retirement from the national team on October 4, 2006. His final match for Australia was a friendly against Paraguay at Suncorp Stadium three days later. He netted his eighth international goal in his final minute on the pitch, which put Australia ahead 1-0 before the visitors equalised as the clock wound down.

Popovic can now be seen plying his trade as Head Coach at the Western Sydney Wanderers. The 40-year-old led the red and blacks to the Premiers- Plate in their first season in Australia-s top flight and was also named Hyundai A-League Coach of the Year.
